The same things that make St Croix such a great snorkeling/diving location also make it less than the greatest for surfing. For starters, waves break on the reefs, not on beaches (more dangerous). During much of the year there's barely any surf at all, and when there is (in winter/early spring) it doesn't come close to a good day in say, Southern California.

Having said that, probably the most popular spot with surfers is Judith's Fancy on the north side of the island.

Take a look at Islander's page on surfing at:

Kyle, were these the ones you were referring to?

The Malibu Longboard Shootout is held in the latter part of January and the Red Stripe Surf Series in mid- to late February. Both are usually held in Apple Bay, which has an average surf of 2-4 feet, according to:

Kevin:

Taking a stab at this....

1) Depends on your definition of "decent", but there are a number of excellent beaches within 3,500 miles and the top surfing beaches in the world are between 6,000 (North Shore) and 10,000 miles (Australia).

(Maybe that was a little sarcastic. I never said surfing in the VI's is bad. But it is VERY different, quite seasonal, and requires caution to avoid wiping out on coral. Remember that the Malibu Longboard Shootout draws top surfers from around the world. It just requires a different skill than what is needed for the North Shore of Hawaii. The distance between Apple Bay and Christiansted is less than 60 miles.)

Note -- Windsurfing in the VI's is almost always excellent thanks to the Tradewinds.

2) Whichever beach you live on is the best, period. Just don't expect to live on a beach on server's wages.

3) Not sure what you mean. This seems to contradict your other questions on this thread. Corona is from Mexico and I haven't seen any large curls in their ads. Anyway, whether it is Carib or Corona, don't expect to live in a beer commercial. Expect to live in a real world where if you don't have marketable skills you will need two jobs to pay your living expenses and you probably won't see the beach much at all. (Ahh, youth....)

i just meant that i would like to sit on a beach with the same kind of atmosphere as a corona comercial, unpopulated. i am a ver laid back person. and i dont have to be right on the beach but within a few minutes would be nice. and is it really more expensive then the california coast, cause im living there right now on less then a grand a month, not in luxury but i have everything i need

With roommates you MIGHT make it here on $1,000 a month. Do you have a big appetite? Do you like to walk?

And yes, SailAway -- youth is wasted on the .... well, you get the idea. LOL.
