Teaching on St. John

Hey everyone. I'm a teacher in the states. I will be moving down to St. John this summer (assuming I can find somewhere to live... do they just not want people to live on St. John LONG TERM!... It seems no one rents LONGTERM!) Anyway, does anyone have any advise about getting a teaching job on St. John? I'm sure I'll have to work as a sub to begin with. How hard is it - is there quick turn over at the local schools? etc etc... any advice will be much appreciated! Thanks!

Be prepared for a 50% pay cut. It's my understanding that teachers at the private school there make about $20-22K (as of 2 yrs ago anyway). I'm sure it's probably higher with the public schools on STT.

What subject (s) and grade level(s) do you teach?

Hey - I love the comment about the pay cut! As a matter of fact, I currently work at a private school that pays 20k less than the local public schools. It's not anything I'm unfamiliar with 🙂 Anyway, I currently teach second grade, but I have two degrees - one in elementary education (K-8) and one in English (language arts). I also have a few graduate courses under my belt, with a primary emphasis on special education. I have also been a private home school teacher as well as a full time private nanny for a household of 3 young children. What do you think? Will any of that help? Do the schools only hire people with Masters?
Speaking of nanny jobs... is there a demand for that down there? I know it takes time to get jobs (especially teaching jobs)... maybe I could be a nanny while I wait for a teaching job to open up. So... any more info on teaching jobs and/or nanny jobs?

Thanks Kim! I'll certainly keep you in mind for a contact as the time arrives, but I won't be down until June... so still a ways off. Does anyone else have any info about nanny jobs or teaching jobs? Thanks a ton!

Sara: Here is the link for vacancies in the Department of Education: http://www.teachusvi.net/vacancies.htm You will notice that the district is St Thomas/St John, don't know if they hire for specific schools or for the district and then place you where needed. Again, SuzanneB on this board is a teacher in the district. Good luck.
