Hello everyone new to the board. My question is about placement companies or agencies that may have been used to secure an elementary or middle school teaching job on the islands. Have been doing a lot of research but would like some input from someone who has had a first hand experience with one. Also my wife is a nurse and has worked in a variety of capacities but is now a APN in oncology. Does any of the hospitals or medical centers have any such centers? Thanks:-)

How much do VI teachers make in a year? How much do principals make in a year?

Pay Scale for Public Schools:
http://www.teachusvi.net/pay_scale.htm

Out of pocket expenses:
Mandatory 8% GERS deduction
SSI deduction
Federal deduction
Mandatory purchase of government health insurance deduction
Union dues deduction

And, be prepared to purchase all of your school supplies from your personal pocket. I even purchase the toilet paper my students use.

My husband and I are both teachers in the public school system. I have previously posted regarding this, so just do a search, and you'll find information regarding the hiring process, etc. Feel free to PM me with questions too.

Our current teaching contract indicated we were to receive a raise at the beginning of this school year (August 2010). We were then told we would have to wait until the new year, with the retroactive pay to be part of the wages. But, this week, we received news that there isn't any money, so we will NOT receive our raises as promised in our contracts. And, we were also just told that no new teachers will be hired, due to the lack of money.

If you are in the area of Special Education, you have a much better chance of being hired. Don't give up though! We definitely need dedicated, qualified teachers here. Good luck with your job pursuits!

I have been researching the board and it is answering many questions. One though is eluding me. If you where to obtain a teaching position at a private school would your children get a discount on their tuition there or even go for free? I know some schools state side that offer that as a perk.

At Country Day School, you get one child free with a full-time position. However, if your spouse's company is paying for the child's tuition, then you get no subsidy, obviously.

Re: oncology positions, the Kimmelman Cancer Institute at SRMC on St Thomas would be your best bet.
