Temperature Discrepancies

I've been watching the temperature on St. Thomas for about 1 month now.

For the past 30 days, the low was somewhere between 75°F and 77°F, while the high was between 78°F and 80°F according to WeatherBug at Cyril E. King.

However, on a different website, weather.com/The Weather Channel, lows are about 72°F each day, and the highs are about 82°F. The temps reported by wunderground.com/The Weather Underground are roughly the same.

While the difference isn't huge, it is different, and I'm wondering how they could be consistently different for such a small area. I would have assumed that that airport would be hottest as it's at the lowest elevation. I would have also assumed, that like in many cities, the Weather Channel gets their temps from the airport as well, which makes this even more confusing.

Can anyone shed some light on this puzzle?

The Trade Winds have been blowing uncommonly hard and in duration this winter. The Trades bring squalls with clouds and sometimes rain which can affect the temperature in the location of the weather station. Some of wunderground's stations are actually amateur home based stations. I think the VI still has pretty much the best weather and climate in the world.I hope this helps.

I use NOAA's site: http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?zoneid=VIZ002

And if you want to SEE the current weather, check out the VI web cams:

I see what you mean Bombi and I do realize that wunderground does have a lot of personal weather stations. It's too bad because they have the best statistics and data available for download (that I've found).

NOAA is a great one, islandjoan. I like this site. What it lacks, or what I lack in ability to find is the historical record. I'm trying to build a 1 year history of the Heat Index, but the information is all over the place and so far I cannot find a good source. I would assume NOAA keeps the data but I don't see any links. I'll have to contact them and see if they can point me to it.

hey simkiss,
BINGO! This might be what you're looking for—climate data for various years on NOAA's site!
The VIs are towards the bottom of the page: http://www.srh.weather.gov/sju/lcd_data.html

Varies quite a bit from location to location depending on the orientation of the site, elevation, etc. Sometimes it's almost chilly where I live, especially when the winds are strong. Didn't measure the temp, but I think there were a few times this winter when it was in the 60's at my house. A delightful little "cold front".

And if it is 72 out there, I'd be surprised. It feels like 60! BRRR!
