What input can you guys give me on the pet care industry there? I have been self-employed in the grooming/boarding/training biz (canine, feline, equine) for 35 of my 50 yrs in VA. I do well here-can I there?

I imagine that most petspoiling is done by "transplants." I see many pleas for "caretaker" positions which are understandably not offered up to outsiders-but would there be any possibility for short-term sitting while owners go off-island?

How many of you have pets that require "professional" services other than veterinary care? Are you happy with the service you have now? What do you pay for it? Is there room for improvement (or expansion)?

How would a mobile grooming business be received(or is there already one)? I was thinking too of servicing STT/STJ while living on STX-but there is no(regular) ferry, right?

At my daydreaming best-would appreciate your thoughts

It wouldn't be logistically feasible for you to work both the STX and STT markets. I frequently have need of kennel services when I travel and would certainly prefer a place where the dogs aren't just kept in a kennel box all day and night for a week. I believe many others who travel off-island occasionally or regularly would also like a good place to leave their pets without always having to rely on friends making time in their own schedules to pet-sit. I know quite a few people with multiple pets and that makes it tough to travel and be assured all will be well while you are away.

Mobile grooming would be well received, although I don't mind taking my dog in to be groomed every 5-6 weeks or so. With the tick issues on the island, furry pets need extra grooming and if it were more convenient I am sure I would have my pomeranian groomed more frequently than she is now.

As far as a boarding facility there are non on STJ (I think the vet has 3 kennels but do not like to take "boarders") so the "island way" on STJ is to find a house sitter and they come and live in your home while you are on vacation for the rate of $25 - $35 per day.

I cant speak for STT or STX

On STX, if you have a tenant-apartment, that person watches animals while you are gone. Otherwise family or friends stop in once or twice a day. Or a friend, emphasis on FRIEND, will sleep over.
