Only a few of the islands are open to tourists and tourists are generally expected to remain within their resort grounds or in certain places within certain cities like Male (the capital.) Their justice system/constitution is based on Islamic Sharia.

I have a couple of friends from there from well-off families and they prefer to live in a foreign nation per the political climate. They do go back to visit, though. I imagine they are nice to tourists, but something to be considered. Thailand is also beautiful and a bit more settled, although when I leave here I like to go towards cold!

Alley, you mention places that you would like to visit. I was just curious because when I travel, It is mainly centered around water and beaches. That is my kind of paradise, on the other hand my husband likes
Europe for it's architecture. We try to do a little of both. As I get older, I tend to have more specific preferences.

Yes, I stayed on an island called Hudhuveli. At low-tide you can walk through the water to the next island, and even though the water is just a couple of feet deep, there is already an incredible array of marine life, even little sea-horses which I have never seen in the Caribbean. The diving is really spectacular. Take a good friend, or a good book, because after dark there was really no entertainment!
The culture was a little strange to me. Only men worked on the island where I stayed, and at sunset you could see them walking hand-in hand on the beach! In Male there is a very interesting museum, a must-see if you like to learn about other countries/cultures.Get a window seat on the flight, because for hours before you get there, you are flying over beautiful green Ocean and tiny coral islands.
