Thoughts and Advice - Moving back to STX!

After living on STX for 2.5 years, I took a job back in the states in May. I bought a new 2013 car, which was a horrible mistake, because I want to move back to my rock!! I owe more on my car that I could sell it for now in the states. My questions are -
1. If I were going to lose about $3,000 on selling my car here, is it better to just ship it there? I hear the costs to ship are about that anyway, but when I left in May, everyone was selling their cars cheap because of Hovensa, so what are your thoughts on this subject? I didn't mind my old island car, although I do wish it had AC! 🙂
2. Does anyone know the exact process of shipping a car there? Can you ship it in a container with other household items or is this separate? When you drop your car off in FL or AZ, what kind of documentation do you need, and what kind of fees do you need to pay once in STX?

Just trying to figure out if it is worth it....

Have you tried selling your car back to the dealership? I did that with my new Toyota before I moved here last year, and I was amazed at how much they paid me for it - cash outright, about $5k more than I thought I would get, they just cut me a check! Apparently used cars are in demand right now?

Also, if you get an estimate via www.kellybluebook.com, they will then give you offers from local car dealers who want to buy your car for that guaranteed price. All you do is drive it and sign over the title, and they cut a check to you or your lienholder.

I haven't shipped a car here to the VI so I can't help with that. But wanted to offer sales advice. 🙂

you have to have the lien released before you can ship. they need a clear title. probably take juliekay's advice check that out.
have shipped many cars here and they keep changing the rules regarding container with other things.

Thanks Julie! I will look into that! DixieChick, I did call the bank that I have the loan with and they said they would allow me to ship it....or do I need to be more concerned with the shipping company?

My friends moved to STX last fall and used http://ilsvi.net/contact-international-logistics-solutions-llc-of-virgin-islands.htm for (International Logistics out of STT) and they allowed for shipping their goods in their vehicles. We are moving back as well, but, in November and plan on shipping our two vehicles and will ship goods in our vehicles using International. Call them and ask for Meme. Just google them if the link doesn't work...International Logistics, St. Thomas. I saw somewhere that the cost of shipping was around 2K per vehicle.
