Hi All,

I'm moving to STJ in September, and was considering getting my TIPS certification updated before I come down. After looking online though, I'm not sure if it's even recognized in the USVI. Massachusetts and a lot of other states like bartenders/servers to be certified; can anyone tell me if this is the case in the islands as well?

Thanks,

Leeann

I've never heard of a TIPS certificate. Is it for tax purposes?

A lot of states require Bartenders especially to go to school and be certified. Never heard of it for waiters.

No, its not the case here. It might help, especially for a busy bar, but experience would help you more. What you will need is a health card to work in a bar/restaurant/catering. Do a search on health card and it will tell you what you have to do.

"TIPS is a skills-based training program that is designed to prevent intoxication, underage drinking, and drunk driving by enhancing the fundamental "people skills" of servers, sellers and consumers of alcohol."

The USVI encourages intoxication (alcohol is cheaper than water), underage drinking (minimum age is 18 but nobody cards), drunk driving (you can drink and drive here and the ASSumption is: 1) that you will realize when you are drunk; 2) and that you will stop driving), and lousy people skills (the VI government recently funded an effort to restrict by ethnicity the eligibility of VI residents to hold certain elected offices.) So no Leann, if I were you I would not pursue TIPS certification, because what you learn might cost you your job.

It's gin, and it really scares me that I know what you are talking about.

Gin soaked raisins are also supposed to help.

Haha thanks for the info! I heard if you can drive straight, you aren't considered drunk, no matter how many drinks you've had. I won't bother pursuing the TIPS certification then.
