Can anyone give me any suggestions on choosing a split air conditioner? We've decided to equip our place with one (though it isn't so much my cup of tea) and I really like the idea of not taking up a window.

The VI is considered an international market so much of the AC equipment you see sold here does not meet US energy efficiency standards so it will only have a SEER of 9 - 11. For a price you can get North American units that will have a SEER of 16-18.

You then need to consider the brand and the dealer. Will parts be available if something goes wrong. There is a lot of no name equipment sold in the VI by ma and pa type operations. Getting parts for anything in the VI is a challenge but how long will it take if it is a discontinued AC unit from China..

For the above reasons I choose MIshubishi units. They make both standard and high efficiency units. They came from Quality Electric which has an inventory of parts.

Hi Islandlola,

A few weeks ago my husband and I were talking to an AC contractor on STT and he also recommended Mitsubishi. Just thought I would add my .02. Mitsubishi sounds like the way to go.

Just know why mitsubishi will save you money on your electric bills it is extremely expensive to put in. I got a quote from quality electric to do my upstairs(with mitsubishi split air units) and they wanted $10k.

I paid $5K installed for one high efficiency and one standard efficiency Mishubishi from Quality. Try a different installer. PM and I will send you the number of the firm I used to install the ACs purchased from Quality.

Jim

PS I had my electrician pull the 220v circuit to where the compressors were being installed. This was above and beyond the $5K.

I had two separate compressors installed along with two separate air handlers, $5K plus the electrical work.
