Pamela,
I read about your connection in St Thomas with the boating world. Do you have any exptimates on slip fees you can give me. Which marinas allow 'live-aboards"? any ideas on those fees?? Thanks for any info. That boat show in May sounds fun- we may consider it.

Travel woman,
So many people have asked me that question, I think I will call around the marinas and ask for rates ... may be Monday before they are posted. All the marinas allow live aboards. Some have more stringent rules than others about what you can have on your deck, etc. Most have cable tv or satellite available. In terms of price it (just a guess) goes from the top to bottom prices - Crown Bay Marina, American Yacht Harbor, then in the middle - Pirates Cove, Independent, Compass Point - and on the lower end Vessup Bay, Haulover, Hull Bay, Ruans. I will try to get prices from the marinas and supply them to Islander the first of the week.
The May show is fun. There is also one in November.
Let me know if I can be of any other help to you.

Thank you so much. We are leaving on vacation and will not return until March 8th so please don't take my lack of response as lack of gratitude. We had book a cheap trip to Paris several months ago - now with recent events, I think we wish we were not locked into a non-refundable trip.....I think we'd be checking things out in STT instead. (But who can't love Paris...? ) Hopefully we will still be down in a month or so to get a hands-on experience.
hanks again for your info. Hopefully we can meet and thank you in person when we come down.

Although I am leaning towards a mooring ball to call "home" in order to capture the breezes and avoid the bugginess of a marina, I would be very interested in knowing these rates too. Marina don't publish these type of long term rates on their websites, but I wish they did. I don't plan on being on the mooring or in the slip too much, but I do need a place to park it once in a while.

Ang,
A mooring permit will cost, last I checked, $5 per foot of boat length plus the cost of mooring tackle.

Pamela,

Thanks for the info (as always!) Is that $5.00 per foot an annual fee?

Oh, and do you (or does anyone) know how strict they are in the BVI, or anywhere else in the USVI were day/night moorings are found, about the 60 foot limit on moorings? If so, would I be permitted to drop an anchor overnight for a 64 foot motoryacht? The boat's displacement is about 60,000 pounds. Obviously, I'd much prefer the using the mooring for peace of mind and not having to lay awake all wondering if the anchor is holding! 🙂

On St Croix the Green Cay Marina has dockage fees of $11.00 per foot per month.

You can check them out at www.usvi.net/hotel/tamarind/html/marina.htm

There are additional fees for electric and water

That's an annual fee, Ang. They are pretty strict in the National Park about the 60 foot rule during season .... off season and BVI I don't know.

Hello Pamela,

When we did the marina section (9/2003); only Compass Point, Independent Boatyard, St. Croix Marina, Greencay Marina, said they catered to or were welcoming of live aboards. And none would give rate information to publish.

Maybe with your position you will have better luck :-). Definately let me know what information you get and I will have it added if permissable, even if just a range to give folks an idea of what to expect.

Thanks,

I am looking for dockage for my 47' catamaran, 24' beam for the night of Wed. March 30 in St. Thomas to pick up my daughter from the airport. Crown Bay has no slips available. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Bill,
To pick up your daughter at the airport, anchor out in Elephant Bay. There are plenty of boats on charter so you can proabably "borrow" a mooring for a few hours - just ask the neighbors. Or as I said, anchor out in elephant bay and dink in to the Best Western right by the airport.
