Travel between USVI and BVI

How easy is it to travel between USVI and BVI as a US citizen? I assume that I'd need a passport. With the islands so close together can you just pop over for a day? Are there ferries between the islands?

Very easy from STT and STJ to get back and forth to BVI by ferry or private boat.
You do need a passport and to clear customs, in and out.

And it's not that cheap, considering the distance, and you pay an exit fee every time you leave. Fares are posted on various websites.

The schedule and fares are posted on this site. Click on "visit travel message board" top of this page and you'll find a link there to the interisland ferry schedule. It's a nice way to visit the BVI (Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda) and since you don't have snorkeling stops you get the max time on each island over a charter. The exit fee is $15.

There are many day trips for visiting the Baths at Virgin Gorda, Norman Island, Jost Van Dyke, diving in BVI, especially the Wreck of the Rhone. Get together with friends and rent a captained boat for the day and enjoy. Design your own itinerary.

It's fun and worth the money. You will need a passport. Once you've done it a couple times each island, the novelty will wear off. I did it for fun and for work. I'd still go to VG when guests would come to visit but no more soggy for me since Mic left. Just not the same.

Mic was an institution. While I haven't had a painkiller in years I'm still sorry to hear he's no longer there.
