I can't seem to follow the thread re: travel nursing jobs on the islands. Anyone already there? Which island, company, etc. Please help-send an email. Where is Sidnie? Thanks

Have you contacted the HR departments of the hospitals? The website for Schneider on St Thomas is: www.rlshospital.org.

There are tons of traveling nurses down here. I am currently on St Thomas and 2/3rds of the ICU staff are travelers. Nova-Pro and Cross Country are the main companies. Kristen Ricci is a great recruiter at Nova-Pro. If you use either please give them my name for a referral please! You won't have much luck calling HR. The hospitals are all government and you have to get a "NOPA" letter before you can work for them, and they are not issuing any right now. PM me if you have any other questions about nursing down here. Ricky Shenk

NOPA is "Notice of Personnel Action" or the official way one is placed on the government payroll. It is a slow and cumbersome process due to the highly centralized nature of the territorial government. All NOPAs have to be signed by the governor personally.

Ricky: How did you get a permanent job at Myra Keeting if no NOPA? (Gathered from other post) Did you get a hospital contract?

Both hospitals can hire personnel outside of the NOPA process. I have been employed at the Juan F. Luis Hospital for almost a year now on an employment contract. One of the reasons the hospitals use traveling agencies for nurses is the dearth of qualified applicants on the islands. If you are interested in working as a nurse and not working through a placement agency, I am fairly certain the HR departments will work with you. The Juam F. Luis Hospital on St Croix has just launched a website, www.jflusvi.org, it has recruitment information in there.

I got a NOPA because I applied for a position that had been empty for over a year (coordinator,) and mine was pushed through. I got it in about 3 weeks, but everyone I talk to says it usually takes atleast 6 months if they are even issuing them at all. I came down here as a traveler, though, not with a permanant position.

Have you actually *seen* your NOPA? 😉
Three months is pretty quick, congrats!
