You should be able to renew through the mail, just send in a new passport photo with old passport. They will return old passport and new passport.

Exactly how it works. Recently did mine

I did not have to send my original birth certificate to get a passport.

but anyhow, i hear we were given a 2 year extension to be in compliance

I have to renew my passport and the Stt passport office at Nisky Center said I couldn't mail it in, that I had to renew at the office.
I have my photo and the application ready, but I'm confused now.

http://www.travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/passports/renew.html
"Passports renewed by mail in the United States may only be mailed to United States and Canadian addresses."

So do they consider the VI part of US for mailing purposes?

I'm probably just going to go to passport office here to renew mine.
BeachcomberStt, where'd you get your photo for passport?

They just mail it to the same place you would.

Since USPS delivers to US VI there should not be an issue getting the new passport mailed back.

There is another recent thread on where to get passport photos.

Geez. It can be done by mail. I did. Go to the web site and look it up for yourself.

Alana, got my passport photo right there at Nisky Center at Picture Perfect. $10.00 for 2.

It doesn't matter either way for me - mail or office.
When I went to the office there was absolutely no one there, but helpful, friendly office personnel and security guard.

Alana, I was also confused about mailing it in, that's one of the reasons I stopped in and to pick up the renewal application.

If you go to the local office, make sure you don't need an appointment first or else get one. I've seen a lot of signs at various post offices in the states requiring appointments for passports.
