Hello All,

Has anyone been to Tutu Bay Beach? I have been there a couple of times, but haven't stayed. All beaches are public - correct? There is one home right off the beach and another area where it looks like someone has set up camp semi-permently. The beach itself is very rocky and very littered. I would love to have a get together of sorts and everyone bring a trashbag and gloves and do a beach clean-up. It is a very beautiful place and needs some care. I don't think many people know how to get there, let alone even know about it. I just moved near it and would love to be able to hang there once in a while. Anyone up for it?

Hello Teresa,

I know Tutu Bay. Haven't been in quite a while though. All beaches are public up to the tree line basically; beyond the tree line can and in most cases is private property. Great idea! We'll contribute bags, gloves and some manpower :).

Is the road paved all the way there? Like I said its been a while and I remember the last time I went it was dirt, washed out, needed 4wd.

Hello All,

It would be fun and satisfying to clean up the beach. There is not a lot of parking, but I can fit a total of 7 people in my vehicle. Part of the way there is wonderfully paved. We call it the best road on St. Thomas. However, then you come to a dirt road that is quite bumpy, but a car could make it. On the way, there is an area called Mandahl Hill. It looks ready for homeowners to buy land and build. They have lot markers and sale signs, but it looks like it never took off. I don't know why, the view is incredible. Island Paul, you might want to come and bring a camera. I have some great shots already. Pamela, after the 15th would be good for me too. We could meet at Mandahl Market on a Sat or Sun, eat Carl's Cajun food (soooo goood), and then head over to the beach. It shouldn't take too long to clean up. It is a small beach, but a lot of litter. I absolutely love the view. I think the neighbors would love to see the beach a little cleaner too. Anyone else up for a little challenge? You might see a part of the island that not too many get to see. 🙂

Hello Teresa,

The development you refer to; the infrastructure was put in place a while back/years but the lots only came to market within the last couple of months. I believe 50 lots is what I counted on the MLS yesterday... for that area. I agree great views.

Teresa,
The driveway (wooden gate with a black mailbox) you pass when you go into those lots is mine! Sweet views. I can fit four people in my car .... anyone want to set a date?

I'm not sure if I'm overstepping any boundries, but I'd love to help. The problem being is that I won't be there until June 1st. But I think that organizing a group once a month or maybe once every other month would be a good way to help clean up the island and get to know some folks. Around here a group gets together every once in a while to go clean up around a stream or river and it's a great way to help the environment while also getting to know your neighbors.
So, count me in if this should happen to become an on going project.

Hello All,

I welcome any and all to help with the beach cleanup. It won't take much effort or time. We will have time to enjoy the scenery. Everyone could bring a lunch, drinks, and a beach chair. Also, good shoes or sandals. There is some trash to clean up and rocks that could both cut or hurt your feet. Since they started selling lots near there, the road is much smoother almost all the way there. In that area are two beaches that we could go too. Depends on how much time it takes at the first one. I don't want anyone to get too worked. 🙂 There is trash dumpsters close by the main road and I would be willing to take the bags there. This would be a great start to helping the environment. I hope many of you can come! Just post your thoughts on having it around 10 or 11 a.m. on May 21st. I will probably pick up lunch from Carl's at Mandahl Market that day. Really good cajun food for anyone wanting some. He is only there on weekends. Plug plug! Hope to see many of you there. Island Paul, no worries, you can be the picture taker and every little bit helps!!! I think I will try to find some kitty litter scoops to scoop in the sand to pick up trash with. Whatever works! 😉

Oooops, believe it or not - this is the truth. A friend of over 40 years is coming to visit for a week starting on, you guessed it, Sat the 21st, so I really will not be able to attend this worthwhile endevour.

I thought Tutu was a land-locked estate - who knew it had a beach? Really it does????

This is my first "family" visitor since landing on the rock over a year and a half ago........so heh, give a 🙂 for me!

Wish i was there to help. Would like to make a suggestion on something that would help make things easier with the clean up (if you can find it there). How about those long, metal, grabby things that landscapers or apartment maintenance workers use to pick up trash on the property. That might get more people to help seeing as that they wouldnt have to "bend over to pick stuff up" as someone quoted. The cat scooper is a good idea too. Now i'm wondering...if so much trash then there has to be treasure left behind to be found. Anyone have a metal detector. Don't laugh. I know someone who makes a decent living on E-bay selling his finds on the beach. btw... i live in Florida..imagine how much the tourists leave behind at the beach. Cha-Ching.

Sorry for the delay - been up to my ears in charteryachts 🙂

Capt. Mike at the Real Esate Center said April Newland has them for sale. Can't locate a listing for her but will check signs on the way home.

Things must be selling as I see a lot more traffic coming in and out of the drive.

This is a very 'out of the way' beach that isn't really good for swimming, but great for unusual rocks, shells, or just sitting in a chair and listening to the waves. Anyway, I think it would be great to clean up the beach. It has a line of trash from one end to the other. I think a group of five people could tackle it in an hour or two, but it would be great to have more people. Anyone up for it this Saturday (June 11th) on STT? I am going by myself if I have too! 🙂 It is a 'small' effort and only the beginning. I know we are really only moving the trash from one area to the other, but the beach will look better and all the trash will be in one place at the dump. I would love to recycle it all, but I am still working on a solution to that problem.

See ya all!

Hello Teresa,

Its a great idea. Wouldn't mind making it a regular thing if folks were interested. Anyhoo, Saturday doesn't work for any VInow people. Is Sunday a possibility?

Let me check my schedule:

1) Doin' nothin' Saturday...
2) Doin' nothin' Sunday...

Add in beach cleanup..

Works for me!!! 🙂

Sunday it is! We can meet at Mandahl Market if there are any people coming that do not know where Tutu Bay is located. The roads are much better for most of the way there. Just past the new lots it gets a little rough, but a car could make it...slowly. I hope you all join. It actually will be very fun and not much work!

Count me in! Would love to participate.

What time at Mandahl? Sunday, June 12th?

Islander- I don't know if this already exists somewhere, but a calendar feature on the VINow board would be really cool 🙂

Best,

LR

Hello All,
h
I just checked in. What time is good for you all? I was thinking around 11:00 a.m. We could grab a bite at Carl's (Mandahl Market only on weekends, I might have mentioned it before - I love the cajun food) and then head over to the beach. I have been there a couple of times recently. I think a lot of the trash has been there awhile and mostly brought in from the sea after storms. Although I am no expert, but getting that trash picked up has got to be an improvement on the environment there.

Anyway, if that time works for you all, than it works for me. I am so glad you all are in on this. It will be a good start. Hopefully we can clean up a new beach each month or so. Well that is my dream anyway. 🙂
