First of all, this board is the best!! Including everyone who takes the time provide such detailed information! Thank You!! It definitely helped me to puts things into perspective.

I have been reading messages for awhile now and have read through many old messages as well. Everything I have read has been extremely helpful, but I am also looking for information about the University of VI. I am planning to attend the St. Thomas campus for a Bachelors degree in Nursing and I am curious to hear if anyone has any opinions they could share. Good or bad. Anything about the University in general or about the nursing program specifically would be helpful.

All info is greatly appreciated!!

Rebecca

One of my professors (I am in the MSN program at Emory right now) is good friends with one of the directors of the nursing program at UVI (this professor lived there for a very long time)....that director's name is Gloria Callwood. Look her up on the UVI site and email her and ask her whatever questions that you have.

I think she could be of great help to you.

Personally, I have heard nothing bad about the program, and have thought about seeking a clinical position (I was a teacher, and I miss it, but I don't want to leave nursing) PT in addition to being a nurse-midwife. Who knows...maybe in a few years, we could end up working together!

I've met and e-mailed some of the instructors in the agricultural extention on the St. Croix campus. They're very knowledgeable and have been very helpful. UVI is fully accredited by the main nonprofit group on the mainland (can't remember the name) that does college and university accredidation.

Does it really matter?

Sorry if I'm being cynical, but in my experience, employers don't put a whole lot of weight into where you went to college.

I think it "seems" that way BEFORE you go to college, but once you are working in your field long enough you realize that it doesn't matter much.

(I realize this post isn't very helpful to you, but my point is I'd encourage you to go to school wherever you like and St. Thomas would be a great place!!)

ExResident - Thanks for the info. I will definitely be e-mailing Gloria. I heard many nurses have left St. Thomas due to large cuts in funding. I was concerned this may have affected UVI's nursing program. It is good to hear that an experienced and well educated nurse is interested in returning to the nursing community in St. Thomas. I hope you make it back!!

FormerOhioGuy - I am glad to hear UVI instructors have made a good impression on you. For me, that says a lot about the University. Thanks for your response from a "Former Ohio Girl" (if ages 0-5 count).

Rich - I appreciate all points of view, so no apology needed. I think my topic title may be misleading. It isn't the reputation of the school name, but actual UVI experiences I am interested in hearing about. I agree with you 100%. I'm pretty sure I have never been hired based on where I went to college. The fact that you don't have any negative feedback about UVI is very helpful. Thanks for the encouragement!!

Hello Rebecca,

Glad you enjoy the site and board.

I am an alumni of the St. Thomas campus. Ask whatever specific questions you have and I will try and answer them based on my experiences.
