I was told recently that it's $0.34 per KWHr (I don't see the bills).

it's not the rate per kw hour that will knock your socks off, it's the leac

see this article in the v.i. source:
http://stcroixsource.com/content/news/local-news/2010/10/05/wapas-hodge-dealing-misinformation-jobs-hardest-part

i think it can go as high as .50 per kw hour here. stateside i hear people paying as little as .13

The electric bills for the past 7 months are listed for our residence here on STX. The total killowat per hour rate (includes LEAC). I have rounded off the amounts to 4 digits.
2/22/10 to 3/19/10 - $.3376/kwh -- LEAC listed as $.2390/kwh
3/19/10 to 4/19/10 - $.3573/kwh -- LEAC listed as $.2609/kwh
4/19/10 to 518/10 - $.3593/kwh -- LEAC listed as $.2609/kwh
5/18/10 to 6/18/10 - $.3454/kwh -- LEAC listed as $.2513/kwh
6/18/10 to 7/20/10 - $.3445/kwh - LEAC listed as $.2513/kwh
7/20/10 to 8/18/10 - $.3498/kwh -- LEAC listed as $.2513/kwh
8/18/10 to 9/20/10 - $.3466/kwh -- LEAC listed as $.2484/kwh

As you can see none of the past 7 months have had the "same" total kwh/rate but have varied from a low of $.3376/kwh to a high of $.3593/kwh. It is totally absurd how high electric costs are here, but given the lack of initiative to move away from petroleum based engery it's a fact of life.

For reference I just checked my current power bill for our home in Seattle and we're paying $.09/kwh (before some minor credits.)

Only place more expensive appears to be Hawaii. CT and NY aren't alot less.

I also believe that one should (generally) add the cost of natural gas, fuel oil, or something to the "Heating Months" utilitiy costs to get more accurate "apple-to-apple" comparison.

That is not to say that something ought to be done to reduce the dependence on oil to generate electricity... but I think my TOTAL Utility costs over the course of a year may be lower on STT than they have been stateside in an upper middle of the country state.

Thanks, all, for the responses. We are paying around $.09/KW here in MD now (Elec. is cheaper in winter months, Gas goes up). We have a heat-pump, wood stove and propane fireplace in our hose, which is 5 years old and since I built it, I made it very energy efficient. We use the heat-pump very little. I burn FREE wood and we go through about 3 or 4 100 lb. tanks of propane a winter ($65/ tank) so that aint bad. We can't wait to move to St Croix !!!! Still looking for a job/transfer and have to sell our house here. See you all soon !!!

Matt - I don't know how many are in your family, but your house sounds very similar to ours in Ohio. We had roughly 2,000 sq. ft. with a heat pump and wood stove (also with free wood). Our house was entirely electric, and our budget bill for each month was $307. I thought that seemed like a lot until we moved here. Had a reasonably priced first month, but not so much anymore. We have a house here that's about twice the size of the house in Ohio and sits on a hill, providing a great breeze. We have a family of four; kids in school and husband at work during the day. We have 6 splits (A/C units), but run only one and only for 10 days per month. Our WAPA bill at the rate mentioned above has averaged $600 per month since that first bill. It's hard for me to swallow sweating like a pig in heat and still paying two car payments for electricity, but as is the standard phrase here... "It's the price you pay for living in paradise". Good luck on your house sale!

Get yourself a Current Cost device. These are great for seeing where you waste energy. A real eye opener!!

Here is NJ - propane is sold by the gal. - last year the price was over $4.00 per gal. and I used approx. 450 gals in addition to 2 cords of wood at $180 per cord. Electric rates in NJ are not as low as $0.09 per KWh but not as high as $0.35 per KWh - my bills are approx. $0.20 per KWh.

NOT TO WORRY ABOUT WAPA. ONE ELECTED OFFICIAL SAID HE WOULD GET RID OF IT. IF HE DOES NOT DO SO I VOTE THAT WE VOTE HIM OUT.

UNTIL THEN OUR RATES ARE SO BAD I'M FOR RUNNING A LINE FROM PR AND FIRING MT HODGE AND THE REST OF WAPA PEOPLE, EXCEPT THE FIELD PEOPLE.

PR may not be so ideal as a source of electricity. My last months electric bill in PR was .23 cents per kWh. And, you wouldn't want the VI to copy there method of covering there excessive spending. Last year they passed a bill that mandated a four year special property tax, that nearly doubles the taxes paid.

Keep looking for a better solution.

Hey now, if we did that where would we get electricity? The local government has repeatedly rejected Hovensa's offers and now Hovensa is in no shape to take on any new ventures. What alternative to WAPA actually exists at this point? What happened to that Alpine (?) company that was going to do a co-gen venture?
