If debts an illusion, send me $100k right now

That money was never going to me anyhow. For anyone older than me. You're welcome. I never planned on having that ponzi scheme money anyhow. I'm taking care of myself. If you are relying on that money, when the Wall St. crooks take it from you, you had fair warning

I don't care about gold coins. I don't care about silver coins. My family has a roof over their heads. Food in their bellies. Health insurance. A beautiful place to enjoy the outdoors. I have never worried once about how my tax money is spent. Wait, check that. I did when they sent young men to die for oil. Namaste

If you truly have that ass-itude, your kids are going to pick out the shittiest old folks home for you to soil your non-gmo depends

Mouth breathing millennials...

Johnny,
That was really funny.

It would have been funny if I were close to being a millennial, had plural kids, oh, what else was funny again? Me not caring about how my taxes are spent because it is fruitless, won't change, and will turn me into a sour old boomer?

At least we agree on the first point

Nice of you to care about all of the little people with little to no retirement savings. Those dirty plebes,"Let them eat cake".

It's ok you're still a pretty and unique snowflake.

Not everyone mocking you and your millennial attitude is a boomer...

So I wonder what the " I'll worry about it later" crowd thinks will happen when:

GERS announces it cannot pay any more full pensions

WAPA announces more price increases since it cannot borrow

The GVI announces a tax surcharge to pay for sustaining government payroll

The views will still be great, the sky will still be blue, the weather will still be great, and the beach will still have sand.

But you can't eat sand.

Is the answer increasing income and property taxes? Maybe going after savings & retirement accounts? Elect Chucky as Governor?

After living here long enough to witness two gubernatorial elections and four for the the senators. One thing that always entertains me is people only want too hear what will be given away by who they elect.
Elect Mapp for Governor and he will hire 1000 goverment employees. Even an idiot should have known that wasn't going to happen. Until people realize the situation and are willing to do their part to make things better. Demand accountability from the elected officials. Its only going to get worse.
All those things Cruzan Iron listed will happen in due time. In the meantime people just want to hear about what benifits them.

And I'll ask again:

GERS announces it cannot pay any more full pensions

WAPA announces more price increases since it cannot borrow

The GVI announces a tax surcharge to pay for sustaining government payroll

What can we the residents of the Virgin Islands do about this? Vote leaders in who will make change is about it.

Until then I will be enjoying life because:

"The views will still be great, the sky will still be blue, the weather will still be great, and the beach will still have sand."

"but you can't eat sand"

But you can eat fish, whelks, and conch. You can grow also your own food with this abundant sunshine.

So my plan: Enjoy life! Grow food and live a sustainable life. As far as we know, we have one life to live. So live it! Stop worrying about BS you can't change.

So Matt, you've lived here 10 years ? Have you seen any changes in the election patterns in 10 years? Do you REALLY think they will change?

Enjoy your life. I would not say anything to diminish that for you.

Eventually reality will catch up to you.

I will say, this is some good advice:

Nope! Which is exactly my point. But really its the only way to effect change. Other than a revolution of the masses which will happen in other places (if it does) before it happens in the VI.

I'm not a government employee so I don't care!

WAPA announces more price increases since it cannot borrow
I've got solar panels already and will just add more!

The GVI announces a tax surcharge to pay for sustaining government payroll
There are lots of ways to work around antiquated VI government systems

And if it got really bad, I'd move to my other house in the states.

At least we agree on the first point

Nice of you to care about all of the little people with little to no retirement savings. Those dirty plebes,"Let them eat cake".

But you just said.. "you can't fix stupid"

but, now you want to fix stupid?

Those "little people" are capable of planning a head, just like I am. giving stupid people money does NOT fix stupid.

The views will still be great, the sky will still be blue, the weather will still be great, and the beach will still have sand.

But you can't eat sand.

I literally have to clear eatable plants off my property because they take over parts of it...

I have faith in people, we lived fine with out grocery stores before.. I'm not convinced we are completely dependent.

this guy has the right idea:

But you can eat fish, whelks, and conch. You can grow also your own food with this abundant sunshine.

BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE!

Matt seems to be doing a good job of it.

I'm striving for it myself.

Reality is all about perspective management for the most part, it can (and will) suck as much as you want it to; or be as awesome as you want it to.

Just get a little perspective.

Cake is yummy. Ill gladly tap into my 401k for some delicious cake. I married a beautiful women, who is a great mother and a good cook. Sadly she can't bake. At all. The baby doomers (yes this was purposeful) make up the vast majority of the chicken little crowd here. I'm sure you'll find others from a different generation. Reading this board is like having a conversation with my mom. I love my mom but some of you all need hobbies. Maybe the Red Hat club?

Red Hat club - very funny.

Watching the VI gov is seriously good fun. What doom and gloom?

I would really like to see a bond payment missed ....... much better than the Olympics.

We we're talking about the elimination of SS and/or GERS. 2 items most have paid something into

Not everybody is in a position to contribute to a 401k/IRA and unfortunately have to rely on on SS/Pensions for their retirement savings. I dont think its fair that people have monies taken from them and put into a system that is not sustainable (For any number of reasons)

I do find it cute some of these Pollyanna scenarios playing out in posters minds about what life on the island will be like post debt default (Especially anyone with assets)

I wonder how many of you went thru Marilyn or Hugo? (Might not be as extreme, but there will be stresses on the island that will be similar)

There is a certain political party that thinks you should have a choice of SS or putting that deduction into a 401K. But we don't talk about those people.

Ice was at a premium because very few people back then ('89 and '95) had generator backup so keeping a freezer operating wasn't possible.

And then the generators ran out of fuel .....

Obviously you had to keep them fueled and that wasn't a problem.
