I just searched the flexmls in STT and there were 5 or so studios for rent for about $500.

I scour what's available regularly and have only seen one little place in that price range in the last few months which was/is a tiny rustic one-room studio high above Red Hook.

Hi Ryan. Look for apts in private homes. Most of these are word of mouth and not listed with realtors. Normally understory apartments include ulitites. Most of are small studios and the land lords are looking for one single person. Rentals found thru realators are generally more expensive, to cover the realtors commission. Just so you understand there is wide varity of lifestyles on the island. About 26% of the population qualifies for some sort of public assistance. There are also quite a few very, very wealthy folks. Good luck to you.

So you want him to move here and qualify for public assistance?
He is not a single person but has a significant other and a TODDLER.

FYI - While realtors do get a very small commission for all the work they do to help people relocating find a rental place that suits them,
their budgets and their needs, that may or may not prove fruitful, they really do know the island, what is available, where and what price.
The landlord owner/pays the commission and they would rather work with a realtor than have to do all the screenings and showings.
Realtors earn their commissions and the rental prices are not inflated to reflect that. Alot of hard work goes into it.
Trust me, if I had to depend on rental commissions, I'd starve and/or end up on public assistance.

If I was moving cold, to a new place i have never been before - I would do my reseach on the area and then contact a local, licensed Realtor to help do the rest. Why not have that expertise available to you? Ya'll could save yourselves a big headache if you did.

OK, Ryan, with your budget, don't expect to live high on the hog. However you won't sleeping in the gutter either. Many folks "relocate" to STT from other improvished carribean isalnds work hard, make sacrifices and carve out decent life. It's all a matter of prospective Afluent white continetials are the VI minority. Without a big bank-roll you'll have to hit the ground running. Be prepared. Not easy; but definitely not impossible.

Alana, I think blu was just saying that times are tough here and not suggesting the OP plan on using public assistance.

I would also have to disagree re use of a realtor to find rental housing. On STX, at least, word of mouth and pounding the pavement is the best way to find that type of housing, IMO.

Close to 100% of the posters who've responded to the OP's questions have expressed their deep concern for his moving plan which they've read in detail and also compared to his first query on this board several months ago when no mention was made of a wife and a toddler in the mix.

To even think of comparing the situation involving the relocation of "folks from (other?) impoverished Caribbean islands" to the USVI with that of a young family moving from Anywhere USA is totally ridiculous and neither "prospective" nor "perspective" has anything to do with it.

If you are moving to Fortuna, you will most likely really want a car. Beautiful area, safe, too, I'd assume, but an HOUR from Red Hook. Great for a University student (with a car.)
