I really wish that I could let the good times roll. That's a wonderful way to approach life situations like the WAPA demon. I think Iwill not be able to rest until I know that I have done what I can to protect myself and perhaps others.

I have discussed that with my landlord but I dont think he sees it as his problem since I am paying the bill. If I owned this home I would put in a solar unit in a second.

STT Resident
not trying to irk anybody. My point was I battled for months monitoring my meter daily and weekly, turning AC and water heaters on and off and found that no matter what I did I could only reduce my electric bill by maybe $150-$200. To me it was not worth the effort so now I have tried the opposite and that is to see just how much electricity I can use. It was kind of an unscientific test to see if WAPA was just charging me a set charge. I have surveyed friends with similar size houses on the island and most are in the same $700+ bill range that I am so I guess I can't just blame WAPA or this house.
We did have WAPA come out and check the meter which they say is fine. As for now I am just stuck with it until my lease is up.

jnrhome,

I hope you will continue to post after you have arrived on island and as you build your home and let us know if your plans work in reality as you anticipated they would when you developed them as theories. Once you too are an island resident perhaps you will be able to accomplish what nobody before you has been able to do and get the island bureaucracy to be responsive to your mainland way of thinking!

I certainly will. It will be interesting to note how others see my way of thinking adapt to being on the island, or how I break down completely and end up in a nice soft room in a hospital in Miami! The build thing is already been set back as the property I wanted was sold. Gotta start over with that, but there are several others that look pretty good. I've decided, in no small part to yours and others heres' advice to get on island before i think farther.

jnrhome,

I gather you'll be here in a couple of weeks and I wish you the best of luck with all that you hope to accomplish on your upcoming PMV -- keep us posted!

oh, not a pmv... been there, done that. I'm coming for good! I have temp housing, and almost have perm housing secured, just working on the job angle and intend to transport my business with me in the interim. I will be a learned government permit holder before it's all over with. The rest of the family is staying in Ohio pending the sale of our house, but I got a one way ticket, so the wait is over and it's time!

Then I hope the sale of your house is speedy so that your family can join you soon!

Thank you for that. It is my greatest wish at the moment (followed by employment as a close second).

Your question was: how do the two locations differ?

I think you were thinking of the sun? Yes, we have lots of sunshine. We also have salt air that seems to damage nearly everything it touches.

I actually meant that the way things WORK here is totally different.

This could be a dumb quesiton but wouldnt it be smarter for someone to finance a solar panel power system for 10-20 thousand (depending on how much electricy you want to use) and avoid WAPA completly. I mean if you paying even 100 dollars a month you would pay it off in no time with how much i hear the prices in electricy jump. Even if you own a home you could refinance and buy it, i think even the givernment gives people lones for using pollution free energy. And your guranteed not to lose power when everyone else does, also ifyou can sell your unuesed power back to the company you could pay it off even quicker. Has anyone tried this?
