We are coming for a pre-move visit the second week of December and I want to go ahead and get everything booked and planned. Does anyone have any suggestions on a cheap but nice place to stay for a week while we look around the island? We'd like to stay in a villa. Any help will be appreciated!

My personal opinion is that living here is so different from being here on vacation (you don't leave in a week - you have to learn how to deal with everything you don't necessarily experience on vacation).

So.... I would find somewhere to stay that is more "normal" for how you will be living once you are here on the island. Otherwise, if you stay at a hotel, etc. it might not give you a feel for what Living on the island is like.

Once again, this is just my opinion.

My husband and I did the same thing, we went for a week to check it out. The cheapest place that we could find was the Best Western, which we promptly nicknamed the Worst Western. I think staying there did give us a really realistic view of living on the island. It forced us to focus on what was important, instead of relaxing in luxery (which really means, we did all that we could to stay out of our room! :)))We will be moving in late July, early August. Good luck!!!

Pink Fancy http://www.pinkfancy.com/ is a good choice. It's a couple blocks away from the "tourist section" but is very well regarded. I don't know anyone who has stayed there that hasn't liked it a lot!

Is the Best/Worst Western really that bad? My poor guy has to stay there (company paid) for a month during training! (And I will be with him for the first week, as it will be our PMV).

I'm scared.

🙂

Really, is it THAT bad?

I heartily recommend Villa Margarita! The owners- John and Adele - recently purchased the guest home and moved down as full-time owners from Maryland. They are invaluable at helping with good common-sense advice on condos, homes, purchasing, etc since they've just been through it. They are WONDERFUL people to stay with - BEAUTIFUL home on the North Shore with pool and beach. They offer a 'happy hour' each day, and really made us feel welcome.
They have a web-site under www.villamargarita.com Or call and talk to Adele. The studio suite worked out great for us and was worth every penny- beautiful, immaculately clean room, fridge, micro-wave, private bathroom and shower.

When was the last time anyone stayed there? Recently? What was wrong with it?

I'm going on a job interview trip early July. Will take all the other suggestions into serious consideration. I need cold a/c and a telephone in room, my major requirements. Of course clean and safe are always welcome also !! LOL.

Thanks in advance.

Barbara, if you have a choice, and want to stay in Christensted, I would suggest the Hotel Caravelle. It's just down the boardwalk from the Best Western; convenient, and a whole lot nicer!!

PS Best Happy Hour on the Island too!!

The Best Western is cheap. The Caravelle is nicer. Villa Margarita is a good option if they have one of the smaller units available (their rates sound pretty good! And the owners are very nice.) If you are traveling with a family, often a condo is the best way to go, as it is cheaper than 2 hotel rooms and you can eat some meals in and save more money. Currently the rates are also a bit lower during the off-season. Let me know your dates and the best rate you are quoted by a hotel you would consider staying at and I'll see if any of the condos I property manage for would be a better/cheaper option for you.

We are planning to come the second week of December. It will be me, my wife, and our best friend who is planning to move down with us April or May 2006. Anything with 2 beds will be fine. After looking at the rates from Pink Fancy and Villa Margarita, we would be looking at something around $90 to $100 per night. I really dont want to stay in a Hotel. I am looking for a villa or something like that.
Thanks-

Alix, don't be scared. Most of the cockroaches can't fly and are under 2"...But the Centipedes can usually take'em...if not, the rats will keep them in check. LOL...just kidding, there are no rats in the rooms:)

I'm getting used to finding the bugs in the middle of the night - I just turn the light on first. Today I saw a geko in the house - not unusual, but he had a bug he was carrying off. GO GEKO!!!!

That sounds fine. We are planning on having a luxurious vacation... just a cheap one where we can look around the island and get a better idea of what its like to live there.

Thanks for the help!

Are mosquitoes bad on STX? I live in the Mississippi Delta where they are REALLY bad. So it would be get away from them when we move there. Otherwise, we are used to them!

What is wrong with the Worst Western? Well how much time do you have? The room smelled like urine. The bathrooms do not have windows, only wood slats, so good luck trying to air condition the room with the bathroom door open. The roof leaks (in more than one spot - so ask for extra trash cans to catch the water leaks. Our neighbor down below smoked pot which smoke was sucked into the ac unit and seeped through the bathroom "window". Shall I go on? The room felt safe in general although the parking is in an alley (scary alley). Good luck!!
