In the New York/New Jersey harbor there is a statue with a saying "Give us your Poor, Your Tired, Your Huddled masses". Do you think we should put a sign on it that says "Out to Lunch" or "The Blue dogs went home", or "New applicants need not apply"?

Perhaps new applicants DO need to apply.

What does the YIKES mean?

Every country has immigration, and frankly ours is a lot friendlier then most out there. The funny thing about that statue is that the French gave it to us and they have some of the toughest immigration laws out there. Look into what it takes to become a French citizen. Last I heard you had to born of a French citizen or no dice.

No signage of the sort you suggest is necessary. The statue was not conceived as a symbol of immigration, but rather France intended it as a gift to mark the Centennial of the American Declaration of Independence. Emma Lazarus' sonnet, which contains the phrase you mentioned, was written as a donation to an auction of art and literary works to raise money for the pedestal's construction. It is only the statue's proximity to Ellis Island that has led people to incorrectly attribute the statue and poem to immigration. There are, in fact, hundreds of other Statues of Liberty erected throughout the world commemorating a variety of events.

dntw8up,
Thanks for the information, glad you can read wiki and share it with us. However the symbol has morphed from the French Gift. I also believe no one has ever confused Ellis island with the Statue. When you come in the harbor by ship the Statue is the symbol most immigrants identify with immediately.

Lizard,

You seem unable to respond to me (and a number of other board participants) without being snotty, so let me return the favor:

You're very welcome for the information; I'm only sorry you are unable to do the reading yourself, and that you have to rely on other people to provide facts for you. The symbol hasn't "morphed", it's just that the misrepresentation has been widely adopted by people who are ignorant of what the landmark symbolizes -- to quote Abraham Lincoln: "How many legs does a dog have if you call the tail a leg? Four. Calling a tail a leg doesn't make it a leg." Also, I don't know where you got the idea that anyone has confused the island with the statue, but there's no need to be embarrassed by your misunderstanding of simple written English. And lastly, it is unfortunate that you are so befuddled as to think you are a credible source for what "most immigrants" think about anything.

HP 1388 PASSED

Whether you are an Obama fan, or not, EVERYONE IN THE U. S. needs to
know....

Something happened... H.R. 1388 was passed yesterday, behind our
backs. You may want to read about it.. It wasn ' t mentioned on the
news... just went by on the ticker tape at the bottom of the CNN
screen.

Obama funds $20M in tax payer dollars to immigrate Hamas Refugees to
the USA . This is the news that didn ' t make the headlines...

By executive order, President Barack Obama has ordered the expenditure
of $20.3 million in "migration assistance" to the Palestinian refugees
and "conflict victims" in Gaza .

Th
e "presidential determination", which allows hundreds of thousands
of Palestinians with ties to Hamas to resettle in the United States ,
was signed on Januar y 27 and appeared in the Federal Register on
February 4.

Few on Capitol Hill, or in the media, took note that the order
provides a free ticket replete with housing and food allowances to
individuals who have displayed their overwhelming support to the
Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in the parliamentary election of
January 2006.
