Why was Mapp elected?
Based on everyone's comments on here, it seems that Mapp is pretty awful. Just curious as to how he got elected if he is like this? Was he different prior to this position and is now showing his true colors or was it just an uninformed electoral base that elected him in. I did a little bit of research and saw how the election panned out, just wondering as to why. Our Governor here in NY is a real treat as well, but doesn't seem to be as bad as what you got down there. Or maybe it feels that way as we have the highest taxes and we don't really notice things not getting done.
There are too many issues to explain it all, but he's a convincing speaker, a savvy politician, and had help from Republican super PAC.

Really? Which super PAC was that?
I can't remember now, but that snoring ad for his opponent was sponsored by a PAC. The fine print was on the ad, and I googled it.
Didn't Lee Rohn pretty much prove that Mapp was accepting bribes many, many years ago? The people appear to have put in a known crook. See link:
I was truly baffled during the campaign at the amount of transplant support he received (particularly from social media groups like the VI Stink Tank, where criticism of Mapp would get you blocked). Shulerman (sp) or whoever it was that ran that group was a vociferous Mapp supporter. I still don't get it.
It's just another example of things that don't make sense here. Local politics is for locals. Just find you way around the road blocks and be happy its not cold.

Bashing elected officials is an easy sport, in USVI and everywhere else. But it also doesn't make much sense. It's like making a choice of applying the wrong makeup on your face and then smashing a mirror in disgust.
In a totalitarian society, people have very little control over their government. But in a democracy, we the people decide who represents us. Thus, we deserve exactly who we elect.
We can only select from those who decide to run, and therefore our options are usually very limited.
Why don't we recruit or otherwise cultivate talented folks to run?
Anyone would have been better than Mapp.
I understand that you all dislike this man. I'm sure that is putting it mildly, but what made him electable in the first place. He was the Lt. Governor, correct? Did he not portray any of these traits then? Seems like he would have been a POS prior to the being elected based on what is said on this forum.
When he was Lt gov he was totally obnoxious and convinced he was, if not top royalty, (since he WAS just ltgov) the next thing to the top...and acted accordingly. And nasty...

People were convinced he had changed because he came across as a man of the people when he campaigned and he managed to convince a large number of voters that his opposition was a person representing the elite.
Also, when some people think politics are just for "locals" the rhetoric speaks mostly to government workers instead of to everybody. It's harder to do that in the States.
Mapp also promised to hire 1,000 people and many people who supported him were hoping for a job.

What she said....
People elected Marion Barry mayor again after seeing him smoke crack cocaine on TV. How can ANYTHING in elections surprise anyone?

Mapp also promised to hire 1,000 people and many people who supported him were hoping for a job.
And promised a restructuring of debt to pay for those jobs.
During the election Mapp was able to successfully portray himself as a man of the people and that he saw his role as Governor as one to make the USVI prosperous again for all residents. The Emperor's New Clothes, indeed.
The reign of Monarch Mapp so began.
I was most impressed by Soraya Coffelt. I thought she was the real candidate for real change.
Agreed.

She didn't have a chance at governor, but she knew Mapp would make her AG. Wonder what her next move will be?
I hope she runs again, and this time gets enough support too win.
She can't win.
She can't win.
Why not?
