There's a black motor yacht anchored off the west end of Buck Island. It was there a few weeks ago and spent 3-4 days there. I'm curious if anyone knows who owns it?

Thanks for the info. She's since pulled anchor. She really stands out when she's sitting out there.

Kevin Brandt runs James River Capital, a hedge fund. He is one of the three owners of Green Cay marina. They bought it from Dick Pelton a few years back.

Apparently he anchors it out there like a floating hotel and uses his other boat Knot My Problem to ferry people back and fourth. According to the crew it is 112' long. We spoke with them at Buck Island. They didn't invite us on board.

Knot my problem isn't Kevins Boat, it's one of Warren Moslers boats (he designed himself).

Curran17, Kevin is not married, but engaged 🙂

Yep! That's it.

The last time we saw it out there (mid Sept) it stayed 3-4 days. During that time one of the large USAF cargo planes did a couple of fly bys - circling the boat & island, heading east, and coming back to do it again. I've never seen them do that before or since.

The day before the boat showed up in September we were followed along South Shore Road to East End Road by an unmarked police vehicle and two large black SUVs with dark windows and 2-way radios. They turned off East End Road by Smokie's in Solitude. A VIP escort for sure. The next day this beautiful yacht anchors off Buck and then there's an air show. Coincidence? Our tax dollars at work?

Regardless, it is a beautiful boat and I'd look real good lounging on her deck.

"Does it look like this?"

I thought that there was either a prohibition or limit of some sort on anchoring at Buck Island. Did I dream that?

As I recall from reading regs there's no overnight mooring allowed at Buck. What I don't think was defined was how far off the shore you have to be to be considered not mooring at Buck (and I hope they didn't drop anchor in coral.)

I think you just need a permit from NPS

We anchor overnight at Buck alot. Never had a problem with Rangers. They have walked the beach with their red flashlights. They come in at 6:30 a.m. with their boat to look at us but just wave.

You can't spend the night on the east end buoys, the snorkeling trail, but it is OK as far as I know to spend the night anchored on the west end beach.

From the USVI Maine Guide:

"Anchoring...is allowed in the designated area off West Beach only and a permit is required from the park superintendent. Overnight guests may stay for no more than 14 consecutive nights. "

"Boats under 20 feet may anchor bow and stern near the shoreline. All anchors must be placed in the wet sand below the high tide line. Boats under 16 feet in length may haul out on the beach area outside the posted bird nesting area. The south side pier is intended for drop-off and pick-up only"
