Is zizzlers open? What's the deal? I thought it was going to open Labor Day but went down there recently and it didn't seem it.

I remember seeing a recent ad in the paper...they're hiring staff now...
Maybe someone else has more info?

I am friends with the owner (Chuck) and the head chef (Don) of Zizzlers.

They had planned to be open by now, but ran into some unforeseen island complications.

I called Don last night and he said that they expect to be open very soon.

He is going to give me a call once they have a definite opening date and I'll post it on here.

Thanks,
Doug

Where is Zizzlers located?

I was just on island last week and didn't hear anything about a new restaurant other than Aqua West is opening another location at the Holger Danske where The Mix was.

It's going in where Tivoli Gardens used to be. I'll check it out for you guys when I'm there the end of this month (if it's open - island time and all). Too bad we will pass like ships in the night!

The Avis needs to check its sources.

I just chatted with the head chef of Zizzlers, Don, and he said that they are not opening tonight.

However, they will be open NEXT friday night.

Thanks,
Doug

No, it is not open yet.

I hung out with the head chef today and he said that they are now aiming to open October 24th.

Thanks,

Was downtown in Christiansted today and went into Zizzlers and spoke to the owner. The delay is they are having a problem getting a permit based on the location of their propane tank. They do plan to open this week with cold sandwiches, etc until they can get a permit for the gas tank.

The owner sounded really frustrated so I hope everyone will stop in once they open and give him some business.

and you know that Tivoli had a tank in use all these years...just another example of how obstructionist the VI can be toward business....At the same time, the place might never have had the necessary permit if it existed before the requirement/need for one--and likely the fire dept did not actively inspect each year as they are supposed to.
While on island last week I saw that Tommy T was closed for some renovations necessitated by the Health dept or such...and that's been a cafe for as long as I can remember--mid eighties at least...

We finally were able to open the Bar & restaurant with a Sandwich and Salad menu (11am til 11pm). We should have our gas on in the next few days and be able to start cooking our full menu.

I hate to say anything bad about Christiansted, but I have been to some bad restaurants with bad food and service, but I think that Zizzlers took the cake.

I went there for lunch today. Had to drink ice tea because one of my friends was on her lunch break. I had the catfish platter which came with hush puppies and I ordered potato salad for my side.

My other friends ordered different entries.

My catfish was the only entree that was good, although I never even got my hush puppies!! The potato salad was horrible and all my friends complained about their meals. We only got refills on our drinks when we left the table to find our waiter!! It wasn't like they were busy, (and there were at least two others working) but he would never come to the table!!

I am sorry I waited so long for this place to open and it turn out so horrible. I have been there before and had a good appetizer, so maybe I'll give it one more chance. Next time I'll sit at the bar so I won't have to get up to find my waiter!!

Definitely mixed reviews. We had dinner in the bar on the night the boat parade cancelled and had good food and speedy service. But friends have been and had NOTHING good to say.

I hope they get their act together.

Been there three times now and like Julie I'm done. Service has been poor to horrible. And the food and been forgettable to inedible. I like to go enough times to give the place a fair chance, I know they're newly open and it takes a while to get the kinks out but they really need to do a overhaul or they're going to end up with no business. Its time to at least hire a new chef. Bad service can be forgiven here if the food is good.

I was a little underwhelmed by Zebos. Foods good but the prices are high. For the same price I'd rather go to Kendricks or Bacchus's where the food is always excellent.

Really happy with Angry Nates good basic pub food. I stick to their bar menu, their fancier items can be hit or miss. And when Brandis is working the bar the drinks are wonderful.

And the Pickled Greek people are torturing us. Is the On Vacation sign really funny when they've had a sign out front for two months saying their going to open soon while they renovate?

This isn't stt, the restaurant doesn't need to look pretty, the food just has to be good. I always think a new restaurant is crazy to sink so much money on renovating a place when it is so hard to get off the ground here. What Dashi did is great. They got a good reputation and a big following and now have a bigger location that they fixed up nicely once they had a good idea it would take off.

Transcript of what happened when we went to Zizzlers for coffee and dessert after dinner at Salud (good looking new menu) at 9pm on a Friday night:

Me: Do you have coffee?
Server: Well, the only coffee I have has been sitting there all day, so it can't be good.
[pause]
Server: So is there anything I can get you?
Me: I guess we're going to go find some coffee...
[pause]
Server: Ok, take care!

So, we went to Bacchus. They were happy to provide coffee. 🙂

Oh, and regarding the Pickled Greek, it was packed last night. My guess is that it was a private pre-opening party. I think the way Peter is going about it is great, not saying an open date ahead of time. He's been working there every day with contractors really fixing the place up. I'm amazed at how much he's done in two months (and here!). So we're not expecting it, and then -- blam! -- we've got a Greek restaurant. I dream of the day...

Peter (pickled greek) has also had issues with licensing to take care of. He's arranged some private parties for his chef to cater so the guy can make an income while waiting for the restaurant to open. I'm looking forward to giving them a try very soon!

We've been fairly pleased with Zebo's. Haven't tried Zizzler's yet since they only had the sandwich/salad thing going when we've stopped to look at the menu at the bottom of the stairs. Sounds like they need more "zizzle"!
