This debate should be interesting:
Bill No. 30-0159 - A Resolution to allow a Referendum vote on the issue of increasing the term of office of local senators from two years to three years
This will be considered on the agenda on Monday -- Senate meeting - Committee on Govt. Services and Housing
I think there was a public referendum a few years ago that the electorate of the USVI voted to reduce the size of the Legislature from 15 to 9 Members - and I thought it received a majority of votes.

I do agree that longer terms are necessary, I can also agree with term limits.

3 terms max. then mandatory wait out 2 terms before being eligible for running again.
Would save the USVI bunch of money in terms of benefits and retirement $$ for the illustrious elite.

I think you should be concentrating on the Executive branch when talking about the "illustrious elite"

that would cycle the senators differently that other positions, which are 2 or 4 year terms, which would mean elections in off years...

I watched the whole session today on LegitTV - 5 Senators were present Chairman Capehart, Buckley, Graham, Hansen and Nelson. Ms. Fawkes of the Board of Elections testified that the 2012 election cost over $350K and that the Legislature should consider the cost of extra cycles of elections - much of the debate considered that 4 years might be a better interval taking that cost into account.
We will have to wait and see if it progresses and is a referendum on the ballot in 2014.

What difference does a referendum make. We already voted to lower the number of senators from 15 to 9. It passed by 75%. The senate ignored it. The senate does not care what the people think, they do what they want to do.
