Interesting article Jamison. One quote from that article that makes sense:

Sometime last year I interviewed someone from a major cable company and asked him about this. One of his arguments against a la carte was discovery, as in it takes a while for new channels to gain an audience, and how would it gain an audience if no one knew about it? What would incentivize people to pay for a channel they'd never heard of just to try it? Whereas people who are getting a new channel included with a package they already pay for (i.e. basic cable) are more likely to flip over to it and give it a look.
