Look local for charities, go to places where they will show you where the money/effort goes and what their plans are for correcting their chosen cause's issues.
Find people that are DOING things & support them, not huge well funded advertisements campaigns for "charities" that give less than 5% of proceeds to the actual charity (sometimes less than 1%!)...
I know of a few examples 😉
