I've done a few when I was first coming up as a young chef and although I was treated unfairly in my mind, I learned a lot that I wouldn't have if I was being paid (even at $5.25 an hour).

I was a divemaster intern at a diveshop in exchange for housing and a food allowance. It was attractive until they had me do all sorts of tasks unrelated to the business. Like moving a washer and dryer from one apartment to another. I almost got a hernia. Stuff like that. When you think of interning at a dive shop you're not thinking "moving man". You're basically their beotch. In their disclosure statement it stated all the jobs you'd be performing but "not limited to". I guess I should have asked if that meant toilet repair too.
