Yup. You read correctly. It's not a joke. (well it is but it's not funny) I have a friend in New York who could not find work. His unemployment ran out. He lost his house, has no health insurance and can't get any state assistance. Even food stamps. This was announced on the local news there yesterday for people who can't afford to feed their pets. What the ****!:-o

i read that the other week, i think it is for a 6 month period. i am not sure if at the moment it is federally funded but could be?? i guess it is better than giving your animal to the pound when you become unemployed and for the elderly who need the companionship

It's not government funded. It's run by private rescue groups, because when people go on welfare, they let their dogs lose or drop them at the shelter after not being able to feed them.

I think it is a great idea to keep all those dogs that would have to be euthanized if new homes could not be found for them.
And we all know hundreds of thousands of animals are euthanized every year.

I wish it was hundreds of thousands. 3+ million dogs and 16+ million cats is more like it. Very sad and telling of society.

It is such a waste and those numbers are heartbreaking:-(.

It's nice to know dogs come before people. I'm an animal lover, especially dogs but give me a break. Whether it's government or privately funded.

Tiberius, dogs and cats do not have the means of taking care of themselves when dropped off in the streets b/c the owners can't/won't take care of them. There are sad situations when people have to give up the pets they love. I think it's a great idea. If a privately funded shelter can help save a pet, that's great. In a lot of sad cases, the owner doesn't really want to give the pet up. The shelter would be providing free food, boarding, wage expenses for workers to take care of the dog, and the cost to euthanize if the dog is not adopted out.anyway. Why not allow that dog to stay with it's loved ones?

Donate time and Money/$$ to your local animal shelters as we have a severe and very high euthanasia rate here is the VI.
Many animals are abandoned when people move off island and cannot afford to take them, they move into a new apt. that will not accept animals or do not have money to spay/and neuter their animals so the owners just leave them somewhere on the side of the road.
They are not wild or feral, just homeless, hungry and in danger of disease, abuse and predation.
It is very sad and their options are not good.

Please don't forget about Lucky Paws Foundation that raises money to help spay/neuter animals and rescues lots of animals.
They too always need people to foster animals, find homes for animals and volunteers. Check them out.

I just saw another sad story yesterday on ABC news. A man has to give his pets to a animal shelter because it's either support his pets or pay for his medical procedures and save his own life. He was very emotional about his decision.

If we take care of the humans they'll be able to take care of their pets. Where's everyones empathy?
