Fish Creek Wild Horses Released to their Home on the Range!

Last week, the BLM overcame rancher protests and legal challenges to release 163 wild horses back to the range in the Fish Creek Herd Management Area (HMA) in Nevada after capturing them for birth control treatment. The horses had been held hostage for more than six weeks by threats from ranchers and the legal action they filed in an attempt to block the BLM from releasing the horses back to the range. The fact that the BLM defended this birth control plan and released horses back to the HMA even though the population was over the established "Appropriate" Management Level is unprecedented and marks real progress in the fight for humane, on-the-range management of wild horses. Wild Horse Education founder Laura Leigh, who has done extensive work documenting this herd and their range, was onsite for their release, as she was during the entire Fish Creek roundup. Please see her moving video of the horses' return to freedom and read more about this important story by clicking below.

Death Toll Mounts from Wyoming Wild Horse Roundup

The officially-reported death toll for last fall's BLM Wyoming Checkerboard roundup was 14 horses, but additional records obtained by AWHPC under the Freedom of Information Act indicate that an additional 75 horses died in BLM holding pens in the days and months after their capture. Traumatic injuries were the leading cause death, primarily broken necks sustained as terrified horses crashed into gates and panels in their desperate attempts to escape. Complications from gelding, including bleeding to death, claimed the lives of 12 stallions. The records show clearly that the dangers to wild horses from roundup and removal only begin with the roundup phase, and provide compelling evidence that the BLM needs to end its practice of brutal roundups and removals and start humanely managing wild horses on the range.

The American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign is dedicated to preserving American wild horses and burros in viable free-roaming herds for generations to come, as part of our national heritage.
