I will just share my frustration maybe someone can understand.

Last year with the help of the Wounded Warrior Project I was granted a hearing in D.C. on a Navy Base. 5 officers made up the board with 2 being doctors. I presented my case that the Navy broke several laws in 2003 for not medically retiring me. The board agreed and retro active medically retired me going back to 2003. This includes retro active retirement pay. 13 months later and I still have not got any money from them. I get a lot of excuses, they lost my file and they keep telling me I have a very complicated issue. They told me 45 days ago they will have this solved in 30 days.

Right now it has become such a headache. I called everyday this week with a response that the person I need to talk to is out of the office. I feel like they are screening my calls. Or maybe he is just sick and it really is complicated to figure out what my pay would be with yearly Cola's over the last 9 years. I don't know.

I would fly to St. Croix this week if I get this. However right now I am just planning on not getting it any time soon. So not moving to St. Croix until August.

My husband is having a similar issue. He retired from the Air Force after 20 + years service. He had a serious back injury and was disabled at 15%. This number is used to determine a lot of benefits & copays. About 3 years ago the military removed his disability from his file. No reason given, no noticed provided - nothing. Until we started getting larger bills for every service and looked into why. He has provided all the documentation 4 - yes FOUR- times because they keep "losing the file". I think that is a common lie they use to avoid solving problems. He is still fighting this fight and it is sickening. His disability still exists and gets worse with age.
He gave over 20 years of his life in service to his country and this is how he is treated.
Best of luck to you.

Try writing to your local congressman and also maybe the office of veteran affairs. That way they'll have pressure from folks other than you.

Divinggirl,
Yeah I honestly believe if something is not easy the file gets misplaced or stays at the bottom of someone's desk. Thanks for the support.

Cruz,
I think getting the congressman to send a letter might speed up the process. However, I had my congressman send a letter to the VA to answer a question I orginally asked them 9 months ago. Congressman sent their letter 5 months trying to get them to give an answer(still waiting). I should have got congressman to send a letter to DFAS as well asking why they have not figured out my pay or created an account for me. I just keep thinking they must be close.

Our local congresswoman's office has been less than helpful (the elections over you know so she has no reason to help - why do your job?).

Yeah the congressman sending a letter is not very threatening. There needs to be accountability. Waiting a year or more for a veterans disability claim as well is just insane. Which I am also waiting for a veterans claim. I am waiting for correct pay from the Post 911 Gi Bill, waiting on my disability claim, and waiting on the military to give me my retro active pay.

I waited over a year for travel pay. DFAS is a joke when they owe soldiers. They could have your pay figured and sorted in one day. I could figure it out in a day and I'm just supply. Best of luck with DFAS and don't back off for a minute, or it will stay lost .

This is so distrubing on so many levels when our servicemen and women risks their lives for us and our country and are made to jump thru hoops to get the help they deserve. I wish you the best of luck getting this resolved.

Thanks for the comments. The whole system is insanity. I called tuesday this week and person I was told to speak to is still not in the office. So they took my contact information and he said he will look into it. I think this was the same person who took my contact information last month and never called me back.

I wish I had some inside secret how to make someone accountable.

If you figure it out please let me know.
Friday my husband called to get an update and was told they don't have his medical file (you know, the one he has given them 4 times) and that the claim can not be processed without it. When he gave the date, time and name of the person the file (both a physical copy and thumb drive with an electronic copy) was given to the woman said, "that's my boss" and he's the one who told her they needed the file. BTW- the "file" they keep referring to is the VA medical records. You might think that the VA disability office would have access to the VA medical files. So frustrating!

I have noticed that different VA offices have no communication and is why I orginally contacted my congressmen.

This paper system they use for claims gives me a headache. I can say that congress telling the VA that by 2015 they have to process all claims with 120 days is some what hopefully. We only have to wait two more years so we can wait four more months :X.

With my foot drop, wrist drop and other nerve issues I should be 100%. With the medical retirement going back retro active nine year is a lot of money. Telling a veteran to wait a year or more to process claims words cannot express my feelings towards this. This is not just hurting me; this is hurting my children, and my marriage.

The attitude I get from the VA and DFAS is a veteran with medical issues needs to hurry up in die.
