Killing in the Name of Conservation Is Wrong

There are only 5,000 Namibian black rhinos left in the world—and soon there may be one less. The Dallas Safari Club has just auctioned off a permit to hunt one of these majestic—and critically endangered—creatures. The intent is to raise money to save the species, but it's twisted logic. Killing even one of these amazing animals is a tragedy.

To bring back the slain rhino as a “hunting trophy," the winner needs to obtain an import permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Denying the permit would set an example to the rest of the world that killing in the name of conservation is never acceptable.

These critically endangered animals deserve to be protected, not mounted in some hunter’s showroom!

I heard about this on the news a few weeks ago and it saddened me. Here's their "justification" for it for those who hadn't heard about this prior. Personally, I think their "justification" is BS and NONE of them should be hunted. Thanks for sharing the link to the petition.

"In recent years, the Namibian Ministry of Environment and Tourism, which oversees the protection of the black rhinos, has allowed three permits a year.

In a letter to the Dallas Safari Club, the Namibian government said, "To hunt a black rhino is not taken lightly by Namibia. ... Only old geriatric bulls, which are marginalized in the population and do not contribute to reproduction, are trophy hunted."

The Dallas Safari Club says the Namibian government will closely monitor the winning bidder's hunting expedition. The club also insists that by allowing a handful of predetermined rhinos to be killed, it's actually protecting younger, stronger rhinos."
