I know this topic keeps coming up, but it seems to be time sensitive - in other words, I move down there on Nov. 2. (Less than 2 weeks!!!! Woohooooo!!!!!!!)

I have two very spoiled, indoor cats that are declawed (and obviously use a litterbox). I plan on bringing them down with me after Christmas. I want to get settled in a little before dragging them to a new life.

I'm moving to C'sted. I'm also still trying to figure out the car thing. I got a quote for shipping my '99 Malibu at $2100. That seems awfully high compared to what I've seen on the boards. I also can't seem to get Lee Flemming to return an email. I'd like to get a quote from his company. Anyway, for that price, I may be better off just getting car there. Because that's not resolved, I'd like to be near a grocery store, laundromat, etc.

On the board, I read that there's a Dr. Manny who owns apartments and it was suggested to PM him. Does anyone have his PM address? Also, I know on St. John, everyone goes to Connections to find a place to live. Where are the postings on STX?

I can't wait!!!! Look out STX! Here I come!

The $2100 is cheaper than I'm paying to have a Bronco II shipped from AZ. Plus don't forget the fees once it arrives. I'm guessing I will have over $3000 including having Flemming to the paperwork for me.
Try calling Flemming. Thier number is 1-340-778-9160.

Why have you waited so long to ship? I've been told that it takes 3 to 5 weeks before it will get to STX. It will take a few days for them to pick up the car from you. Then most likley it will sit a few days until they get all of the cars ready to ship to Fl. Then it has to sit in Fl. for 72 hours, then maybe another wait for space on the boat. Then it goes to P.R., I don't know how long it takes for them to go through your car stealing everything,LOL, but I'm told once it leaves FL. it takes 3 to 5 days.I don't know how long it has to sit in STX docks before you can get it, or if you can get it Immediately.
If you end up renting a car, call Sharon at Midwest Auto Rental. 1-877-772-0438. Very nice to deal with.
Good Luck.
We will be down there Nov 15th for just a month.

Manny's number is 642-2831, he is pretty good about getting back with people that leave messages. I live in his apt. building, he is a good landlord. The location is fairly close to a number of conveniences, but you will need a car (pretty much regardless of where you live). I am pretty sure he has an apartment or two available.

The number you quoted for moving your car is pretty much just the starting point, as the earlier poster mentioned. The final cost, once all the taxes, fees, and first year insurance insurance (gotta pay it all up front!) is going to be over 3K. As an editorial statement, there are plenty of cars on the island already, we really don't need another one brought over :)!!! You may be better served buying one here.

I agree with bnk1227, in that there enough cars there already. However I'm bringing my own because I figuring it would cost between $8K to $10K to get one that I would be comfortable with that would be a good dependable one. It's cheaper for me to send one down that I know the condition of.
My friends bought a few year old Jeep for about $5K, and I was in the shop for over 5 or 6 weeks, maybe longer. They bought it from one of the bigger dealers. They also bought i "beater island car" for $1200 while the Jeep was in the shop, and the last time I talked to them, they had NOT had any problems at all. LOL
So you can just play Russian Roulette with a car or bring a good one. I'm reasonably sure that once you are on island for a while, and have met many people you could probably find a good car, it's very hard to do that just moving there and not knowing anyone, and be able to trust them about a car.
IMHO

Thanks guys! I appreciate all the info! I'll call Manny on Monday about the apartments. As for the car, I got one quote a few months back, but the cost of shipping is almost the car's value. I'll probably just be buying one once I get there. Assuming the rain lets up enough for me to do so!
