Still searching for leads on pet friendly long term rentals on STX. We are being relocated in the first weeks of October and am very nervous about finding a rental. We would prefer 2 bdrm but are flexible. Would like to be on the East End-I am working in Sunny Isle. 2 adults, 2 dogs and are looking for long term rental-don't want to go over $2000 a month. We are very excited about our relo to STX but I am getting anxious about finding a home for us AND our dogs!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I do not know if they currently have any openings, but you might try these: You can try Ocean Terrace Condos (340-773-6901) as they may take small cats and dogs. Also try Easterly Apts (340-642-2831). They are both located in Orange Grove just west of Christiansted.

Hi Marty,

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I read your post to mean you want to be on the east end because you will be working at Sunny Isle. I think the east end is the least convenient area to SI, unless maybe you were way out west, and up in the rain forest.

To get from east to Sunny Isle, you have to go through downtown Christiansted or go around the south shore, which is a very long way. Just a thought.

Sorry no leads on an apartment. I may have something in January or February. Won't know for a while.

Good luck.

Go to www.virgin-islands-on-line.com and locate the St. Croix map. You will see Sunny Isle right in the middle of the island. Rt. 79 runs north from SI to the north shore, some nice areas and really convenient. Running from SI toward Christiansted, there are nice areas, but I hate that road (Centerline # 70) between 4-5:30 or so. Going west and south is a little more wide open and less congested.

If you go just a little east, it's not too bad, but you still have the C'sted traffic. But, hey, I'm spoiled. I've been here a while. Maybe you will find our traffic to be a piece of cake. It's not horrible, horrible, and there is going to be a by-pass eventually.

With a couple of dogs, it may well be more about them than you.

I have the map and have checked it out. I have just heard about nicer areas on the east end and so started looking on that end of the island. If you have any suggestions on areas mid island than please let me know. I currently live in the Washington DC area and traffic is terrible so I am looking forward to STX traffic! Thanks again for your help.

Nice areas are not as clearly defined on STX as you might be used to in a city, like DC. We don't have subdivisions or bedroom communities or even redeveloped urban areas. There are some upscale neighborhoods, and one immediately thinks of the east end. Actually there are a few subdivision type areas, like Judith's Fancy or Beeston Hill, both very nice and a little west of C'sted. I live in Estate St. John. I have two neighbors abutting my property that are very upscale houses and directly across the street is a little square simple house and one little frame house that looks like a trailer.

There are some areas where you probably don't want to live, but it would be difficult and unfair to label a whole estate (area) as bad or good. That makes it really tough to find a place while off island unless you have someone here you trust to make the call for you. I am assuming you did not do a PMV. You might want to look for a short term rental so you can get to know the areas a bit before you commit to a year or more.

Thanks for the advice. The company that I am starting with is giving us 30 day transitional housing and we are doing a PMV next week. I think that should be helpful. This website has been a lifesaver!! It only makes me more excited to move there!!

The 30 day housing will be the real lifesaver. You can probably narrow down the areas you like during your PMV and concentrate on them during your 30 days. Most landlords don't know they are going to have a vacancy until they get their 30 days notice ( IF they get 30 days), and then they usually want to take a few days to clean and make repairs, etc.

Since you will be here and able to take a place anytime between early Oct. and early Nov., that will make it considerably easier. Also, perspective landlords can meet your dogs. Some landlords will accept pets if they can actually see the dogs are clean, not flea ridden or ferocious, and your dogs get along with their dogs.

Welcome to St. Croix. Do you want to tell us what company you are working with?

There were two ads in Sunday's Avis for pet friendly rentals. I passed them on to Sharon Early at Coldwell Banker and she is checking one of them out tomorrow. You can call her at 340-719-2002.

Thanks again for all of the help. Everyone has been so nice-we are REALLY looking forward to our move! I will be starting with Office Max and excited to be coming to STX. I have been in contact with Sharon Early and she has been extremely helpful. We will be meeting her next week. Again, thanks for the info and if anyone knows of pet friendly rentals please let us know. Our dogs are great and think they will be happy with the move as well..our only concern is getting them to the island!

Your best bet is really the local paper and driving around looking for rent signs once you get here. Pet friendly rentals usually mean houses and they can be hard to find sometimes and be prepared to pay more for them. 30 days should be enough time to find a pet friendly rental this time of year, it may not be your dream rental but it will be a start.

You should also be calling every brokerage on island looking for a rental. Realtors wont really go out of their way just for a "possible" rental. Once you're here it may be different, but until you are you won't be taken as seriously and many landlords will not even consider you until you are on island.

Hi Marty and Andrea

I have a large house in a rather upscale area near Frederiksted known as Little Lagrange with three bedrooms, two baths, an very large living room and separate kitchen and laundry room. There is also plenty of closet space. The cistern is about 50,000 gallons and I have backup solar voltaic power and state-of-the-art batteries to run the water pump and other essential electrical needs if there is a power outage. I'm up on a hill facing the West and the view of the ocean from the porch is something you would not believe. I live in the downstairs part of the house and have four dogs who get along very well with other dogs. They and the present tenant's dog have the run of the four plus acre property and many more acres of surrounding rain forest. There are no neighbors to speak of in the immediate area. Sunny isle is 15 to 20 minutes away on the highway. The $2000 range you are talking about is workable. If you would like me to e-mail you some pictures or are interested in visiting the place give me a call at 340-772-9025. The tenants I have now have been in the place since the house was built, about 12 years, and have kept it up very well. The wife is a teacher at country Day school. I never had a rent contract with them and haven't talked to them about their leaving but they have been paying basically the same amount of rent money since they moved in and seem unwilling to accept the idea of an increase which I see as a necessity to meet my increasing expenses.

Husband arrives in 2 weeks as project mgr for construction firm. If still available, where on island is it located? We are a mature couple, only shy cockerspaniel and small cat. Also looking for island car.

Look forward to hearing from you.
