Good day!

Two weeks ago my roommates and I acquired a mama dog (AKA Dirte') and 7 puppies from the dump close to Mon Bijou. According to people who frequent the dump, Dirte' had been left there by her owners about 6 months prior to when we found her. This litter of puppies is the second that she has had while living at the dump. Very sad.

Dirte' was extremely malnourished and had severely irritated eyes. She was however, very friendly and happily accepted our affection and food. Afterwards, she led my roommate through the bush to where her puppies were hidden. Being the suckers we are, we brought her and the puppies home with us. We wouldn't have been able to sleep at night knowing that her and the puppies were at risk.

Dirte' is beginning to look better after TLC, and the puppies are healthy and playful. To our surprise, Dirte' is house-trained, extremely quiet, and is completely kid safe (roommate has a 3yr. old daughter.) She comes when called, follows you like a shadow, and is very loving.

Here's the catch: We have one rescue dog at home, and Dirte' is agressive over food with other animals. We have no good way to separate the two, and it is unfair to our dog that he doesn't feel comfortable in his own home. We also cannot afford the extra expense of vet bills and the groceries necessary for 8 extra dogs. We reluctantly decided to take Dirte' and her pups to the animal shelter. Sadly, the animal shelter does not have space for them. They informed us that the puppies would be euthanized within 24 hrs. and due to Dirte's disposition she would not be able to share a kennel, and would also consequently be euthanized. Needless to say, we took them all back to our home. However, we move on June 1st and will no longer be able to keep them.

If you are able to take in Dirte' and her puppies, please call Haylee at (254) 485-8078, or Chandra at (340) 226-7577. Dirte' is a mixed breed, approximately 10 yrs. old, about 30 lbs., and would be fantastic in a single dog family. Alternatively, if no foster family is found we would appreciate donations of dog food, puppy chow or help towards a visit to the vet for Dirte' and her pups! We have found good homes for three of the puppies, and are more than happy to help you find homes for the remaining 4.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this! It is a sad and unfortunate thing that due to a lack of funding, animals and people are left to fend for themselves on the streets of St. Croix. Please do what you can to make a positive impact on our little island...it won't go unnoticed!

Update:

I have not received any phone calls regarding interest in fostering our little "pack from the dump" : (

The puppies are now 4 weeks old, Dirte' has stopped producing milk, and they are eating us out of house and home!!!

If anyone is interested in giving one of these pups a loving home, please contact us and we can send pictures to your cell. Our only request is that you give us your word that you will get them spayed or neutered!

Thanks, and have a great day!
