searching for rental up to 600 per mo stt

Hello! My name is Brittany. I have a quiet, clean, responsible family of 3. (Husband, 3 yr. old son & myself) We are moving to the island in June 2011. My husband will be working as a dive master on STT. Husband has previously lived on Island and has local references if needed. We are prepared to live a modest lifestyle and are asking if any of you know of a safe, live-able place for long term renters. We are planning on spending around $600 a month on rent. Less would be wonderful however finding that is almost unrealistic. We are open to renting a room in a shared home or studio, whatever we can find really. Please keep us in mind if anything arises. you will have a difficult time. our studio rents for 900 and we don't allow children. before you move i would suggest that you review this board as it has typical rents on apartments.

Yes, I'm sorry to say that your goal of $600/mo for a place to fit a couple and a child is unrealistic for STT....heck, as mentioned above, a studio for one is going to be more than that. I have a small studio in my place for $640, but there is no way 3 would be comfortable in it...a couple would be tripping over each other in it. I do have the main bedroom in my two bedroom apartment that will be available in June, but it's $750...

Plus, how many potential roommates would accept a couple AND a 3-year old? $600 is not realistic in any way.

As somebody who has just gone through this, I can tell you $600, in itself, is unrealistic. You're better off making your min $900--for a studio. And even then, good luck handling that with a 3yr old. The ones I've looked at where too small to house myself and just a dog... (I don't know what it is with people putting in a FULL QUEEEN in a bloody studio. Really? Gotta have a murphy bed, or traditional japanese futon).

For one bdr, budget ~1,200. You can find some cheeper, but as the price goes down, so does the quality and location.

It will be tough to find --- as everyone has mentioned a place suitable for you and your child for $600 Mo - as an example I rent a 1 bdrm apt under my house for $650 unfurnished + all utilities and usually specify in the lease - 1 person only - 1 car only and have had long time tenants always - maybe you can come across a roommate situation with a single parent looking for another family to share with but really you will have to network quite a bit to find a place that is furnished and livable in your price range.

We have a very small efficiency. We put in a very comfy futon "type" sofabed. I say type because it's not exactly a futon...anyway...when folded down into a bed it's 48" wide and it's 70" long. We thought it would be ideal in the small unit. NOBODY wants it! Every tenant who was there more than a month asked for a "real" bed. We finally gave up and put it in our own house and bought a full size bed. Tenants now happy!:-)

Crazy! I guess I would factor in the ease of switching. Murphy beds are nice cause they are so simple to convert - pull down, push up; you can do it one handed. I have a futon couch at home in Dallas, and it's a bitch to convert. It takes so much effort to convert it to a couch that I just never convert it to a bed, unless I have guests. Then it just stays a bed until they leave.

🙁 well thank you all for your help and advice! ha! a little depressing i must admit, however realistic. we will continiue working with our budgets and see what we can come up with. thank you again.
