hi, i am a marine science grad student moving to stt this august and i need help finding a place to rent. i may have a roommate so a 2 bedroom would be great. does anybody have any suggestions for finding a place? i can afford only one trip down there to drive around checking the places out, so if ya'll have any suggestions on the best way to do this, or if any of you know of available apartments, please get back to me!

Hello Chris,

Keep an eye on the apartments posted in the classifieds on this message board and on the local papers' online versions. You might consider coming down a week or two before school starts and staying in a short term rental or B&B and find an apartment during that time period; again look at the classifieds here, in the papers and once on island you can ask around, drive around and look for 'for rent' signs that some landlords put at the end of their driveways and so forth. During that time you can also drive around and get acquainted with where stores are located, get a general feel for the island, try to get your utilities set up, etc. In August (because its off season) you should find a good bit of apartment availabilities. If you want to come down and get an apartment during a pre-move trip the suggestions are the same. Wouldn't do that too far in advance if you have a typical college student budget though, as you will likely have to start paying rent and that's no fun when you consider it will be sitting empty until you move.

All the best with your plans.
