My gf and I are going to be in St. Thomas for 3 months (June 1-Sept 1) and we need to either rent a car of purchase something cheap. I don't want to spent an arm and a leg for the vehicle but we want something reliable. She'll be working at the hospital as a travel nurse and I'm trying to volunteer at a school so we need something to go back and forth and for our family and friends who plan to visit. A lot of people have suggested we just rent but paying 800+/month seems crazy when I could buy something for $2,500 and hopefully sell it or donate it and write it off on my taxes when we leave. We are up for either though. She is flying in this Friday, May 29th but doesn't start working until that Monday. I would like her to have a car on that first day of work if possible. I won't be there until June 14th so I want to make sure she is taken care of until I get there.

$800/month X 3 = $2400 and you don't have to worry about registration, maintenance, breakdowns and parts and trying to dispose of a $2500 car which is guaranteed to have some issues!
