Would like a heavy SUV or with 4-wheel drive in good condition -- I don't want to pay for a ton of repairs! Will be here a year or so, so would love something around $500 a month.

Maybe you can lease one from a car rental company that way no one has liability issues in the event of an accident or a breakdown.
