Does anyone have a good source for buying shipping containers on STX? Do you know what they are charging for them? Thanks

What kind of shipping containers? 20 foot, 40 foot, smaller? If you're looking for a 20 or 40 foot container, you could check with the larger shipping companies like VI Cargo or even O'Neal's Transport. Sometimes they have used ones for sale.

I would like a 40 foot one. I'll give them a try. I know you can pick them up in the states for under $1500 all day long but I'm sure they will be higher on island. Thanks for the input.

You're welcome. Beware if you get one in the states for cheaper, you still have to pay someone to ship it here. You also might try The Trading Post. Sometimes they have used ones too.

Big difference. Anyone know what it costs to ship it from the states, and does it matter if it's full or empty?

My experience shows shipping cost is $3000 to $4000 alone.

Containers that can be shipped cost well over $2000 ... they need to be seaworthy and certified.

Junk $1500 containers are usually not certified and no shipping company will touch them.

Best is to find someone bringing cargo down, buy a certified container, cost share the shipping, and retrieve on arrival.

Locally, you will pay over $3000 for a box.

However, at that it is not much over $10 a square foot floor space... very cheap secure storage ... if you have a place to put it. But then, make sure the space is secure, as there are those with bolt cutters and torches that will cut open containers, just to see what they can take from inside. Even padlocks and steel bars do not provide total security.

good luck.

Maybe a silly question.......but I like risks! I certainlyt would not need a 20-40 foot container, but have no idea what other sizes they come in. After the hurricane this past year, if I can get something inexprensively, I would love to pick up a small one to 'clear the yard' quickly. I had no idea of how much was involved until we had a hurricane, and had nowhere to put things.

Thank you to anyone who can give me some information!

All the best,

Dan

Dan,
Do you want a container or just rent a dumpster? For yard waste & debry I suggest a dumpster & it's fairly cheap.

Call Berry at Flemming's Transportation. He might have what you are looking for.

Thank you so much! After Omar, I think my days of picking up 'forgotten in the rush' things from the yard, from all over the neighborhood, are over. A quick way to store seems so much more important now.

Best wishes and thanks again,

Dan

Jones,

Did you have any luck getting your container? I am planning on building a house out of them on the island and need to know if things worked out for you.

Thanks,
Dave

I have been meaning to ask this question for a long time and keep forgetting....This thread reminded me.

There is a container on Northside, not far from us. It's painted yellow and appears to be a house, but I'm not sure. There is a fence, nice big yard, a covered pad and always at least 1, usually more, bbq grills, sometime a nice looking trailer and other things in the yard, but I never see any people.

Anyone know if it's a home? Just curious.

Juanita,
That location is going to be a BBQ joint if they ever get it open.
Looks like they're getting closer since they moved the food trailer and gravel in.
