At the risk of sounding like a HUGE nerd 🙂

Does anyone know about the Scrabble Association of the VI? I read in the Trader that they play on Thursdays at the Frenchtown Deli.

I'm highly interested. Does anyone on here play there? Or have any more info on joining?

Thanks,
Jen

I don't know about that but I happened into a Scrabble game online a few years ago & wound up playing against a guy who lived across the street from the K-Mart near town on STT. He beat EVERYONE! So there must be some other good players down here.

Terry, you win. Let me know when you are back on island and I'll bust out my scrabble board.

This kind of group activity starts small and slow on STX. People who are interested find a public venue (beach bar, restaurant etc) and meet there on a non-busy weeknight - tell the owner what you are doing. They eat and drink and participate in -- scrabble, trivia etc. Friends tell friends and soon, if there is enough interest, you have a weekly activity.

No one usually "organizes" such a thing for others, it just starts and grows.

alright so I went tonight! There were about 7 people there. It's at the Frenchtown Deli and it starts at 5:30 pm (although below it says 5pm) and goes til ?
It's pretty funny actually. They gave me a list of words from the official accepted word list and they are ridiculous. Words like AA, Joe, Moe, Hajj...etc are accepted. I think it might get pretty heated unless you study your words! ha. It was a good time and everyone is super nice.
I'll defintely go back.

Just an update!

if you need more info here it is :

NATIONAL SCRABBLE ASSOCIATION OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS - CLUB No. 190

St. Thomas: Meets every Thursday evening at the Frenchtown Deli at 5:00 pm. For more information call 776-2035.
St. Croix: Meets at various places. For information call 772-0727.

I found this online for those interested on the East End....
ST. THOMAS - EAST END - SCRABBLE ANYONE???

The National Scrabble Association of the V.I., Club 190, seeks people who live on the East End who are interested in starting another Scrabble game on the East End of the St. Thomas. For more information call Virginia Monsanto at 776-2035.

I'm rusty on my Scrabble skills but love the game. Might drop in on that, though. Thanks for the update.

You could always start a renegade game outside of the National Assoc.
I would find it pretty hard to play with those words. I can beat my American hubby quite resoundingly if we play with my old UK Oxford English Dictionary - he flounders in confusion while I rack up the points.
If I was still there, I would join you in a heartbeat. I tried to locate the StCroix club -it used to be at one of the middle schools - but I was never successful. I think it was in a dormant phase at the time.
Scrabble is great for kids to expand their vocabularies but also to get to hang out with adults being playful - perhaps one of the schools might like to host a club for those who can play earlier in the day.
Good luck to you.
PS "jinx" is always a useful one.
