St. Thomas, VI - October 09, 2010 – Sunshine Foundation of St. Croix and Lucky Paws Foundation of St. Thomas will present SNIP (Spay/Neuter Island Pets), the first ever low-cost spay/neuter weekend for owned and feral cats and dogs at Bolongo Bay Beach Resort in St. Thomas on October 23 and 24.

This event is the brainchild of Jim Hines, a St. Thomas animal lover and activist who shares the goal of the two 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations to end pet overpopulation in the Virgin Islands by providing low-cost spay and neuter services to people and pets in need. This is the first of many such events to bring awareness to the very real problem of pet overpopulation. “Education along with an active spay/neuter program will greatly reduce the unacceptable euthanasia of so many thousands of perfectly adoptable cats and dogs,” stated Hines.

A highly trained team of licensed veterinarians and certified veterinary technicians will be joined by dedicated volunteers on a fully equipped surgical spay/neuter vehicle recently donated by the Animal Rescue League of Boston. According to lead veterinarian Stacia Jung of St. Croix, “Over the two day event, our team will strive to alter at least one hundred owned and feral animals.”

Appointments for owned pets must be made by Thursday, October 21 by calling Liz at 340-690-3335. At the time of admission and the payment of $25, a statement certifying financial need or hardship for our services must be submitted. Walk-ins will not be accepted during the event.

Additional volunteers are needed to assist with the clinic in admission and discharge, anesthetic prep and induction, and recovery. Also needed is donation of clean used towels and blankets as well as donation or loan of carriers and crates. To render assistance, please call Dellia at 340-513-1854.

This historic event would not be possible without the generosity of the following very special sponsors: Animal Rescue League of Boston, Aquafina, Bellows International, Bolongo Bay Beach Resort, Crowley Shipping, Gatorade, Lucky Paws Foundation, Sunshine Foundation, and West Indies Corporation.

We've spayed or neutered over 90 cats so far this weekend...if you have a stray that you can catch, bring 'em down quick! We may take a few walk'ins....
