2017 COMMISSION TO HOST PUBLIC FORUMS

The Centennial Commission was established to commemorate the 100th anniversary (in 2017) of the transfer of the Danish West Indies to the United States; thus, becoming the U.S. Virgin Islands. March 31st of every year is recognized as the official Transfer Day in the territory with the ceremonial lowering of the Danish flag and subsequent raising of the Stars and Stripes. The first and official ceremony took place on St. Thomas on the grounds of the Legislature at 4 p.m. on March 31, 1917.

The Commission, in an effort to get public input, is hosting public forums throughout the Virgin Islands. The schedule for the first series of forums follows:

Saturday, September 27 1-3 p.m. Earl B. Ottley Legislative Hall, St. Thomas
Saturday, October 4 1-3 p.m. Legislative Hall, St. John
Saturday, November 8 1-3 p.m. Frits Lawaetz Legislative Hall, St. Croix

The public is invited to attend and share ideas and concerns on how best to commemorate the 100th anniversary.
