Im 18 years old and graduating high school this summer. I am planning on moving to the USVA sometime next winter and i was curious about a few things. How much money would be neccecery to bring with me for the initial period untill I find a job? Is housing hard to find? How much is postage for large items (drumset)? Are there many venues with live music? Also I've read that the only documents neccecery for immigration are a driver's licence, birth certificate and possibly a passport. Is this true?
Thank you in advance.

Are you a US citizen? If so you don't need a passport.

Hello Boris,

What type of job are you going to be looking for? Finding an apartment varies by island, St. John usually being the most difficult particularly during high season (lots of seasonal workers)... do you know which island you want to move to? You can get a rough idea of postage cost by going to the US Post Office web site and entering your zip code and the destination zip code and weight ect. There are some venues with live music - yes - on St. Croix there is quite a few jazz venues, blues festivals on all three islands once a year, there is calypso, reggae, Caribbean sounds, there is some rock. Immigration documents depends on your nationality; but what you described is accurate for an American.

Money? I'd bring $3,000 - $4,000. That will allow you to rent an apartment (first, last and security) put down deposits for phone, cable, utilities, etc. and put a roof over your head until you find an apartment and a job.

A good time to look for a service job is early/mid November, just before the tourist season.

Have you ever been to the Virgin Islands? If not, you should probably also have plane fare home, just in case. Good luck.

I am hopefully looking for a steady gig playing music on St. Croix, however I realize this wont be the easiest form of income. Maybe a job in the fishing industy, or a simple bartending , or hotel job. I am not attending the university

Also, Is there a site I can access from the states that I can put an ad in a newspaper or some form of messageboard?
