Ya know...if I hadn't been reprimanded for my sarcastic humor I WOULD have said,

"Rumor has it that Manpower is opening an office on Water Island."

PH

ps: what type of work are you interested in?

Derrick: Most jobs are filled from people who are on island. Because living in the VI is so very different, employers are skittish about hiring someone who doesn't know what it is like, hasn't settled in, etc. I heard a story about one of the EDC guys who moved down here lock, stock, and barrel with his 5 employees, proceded to build a million dollar house on a million dollar lot and has now (in very short time) liquidated everything and returned to the states. He was accustomed to having things his way and found out that it doesn't work that way... If you have a special skill, we could point you in the right direction, though...

I have been reading these postings, what to expect, cost of living, and so on for about a week now due to prospective job I am supposed to hear about in a couple of days. I am 47, married, and my wife and I are starting to get excited just a bit. It is almost as though what started out just for grins is becoming a dream. Dont get me wrong, I am not the kind of guy who lives with his head in the clouds, but the pace (as you call it "island time") sound like something I could deal with. What my question is you said if you knew special skills, you could point someone in the right direction. I have reached a point where I may be disappointed if this job does not work out. I am an estimator for a steel fabricator/erector with detailing (drafting) drafting skills, project manager, and am computer literate. (to a degree anyway) Anyone you know in that area? This job was supposed to be St Croix.

Hedgin my bets

Mike

Hello Mike,

You are in the construction business.... steel work, drafing, project manager...?? Not sure how you would get in touch with the necessary people but there is large construction project on St. Thomas at old Yacht Haven in Havensight going on. And then in today's newspaper there is an article about a project on St. Croix which is still in the thought process stage - but might be worth keeping an eye on - http://www.virginislandsdailynews.com/index.pl/article_home?id=4463893

I don't have any other immediate suggestions and not sure if this is the field you are looking for???

Truly appreciate the info guys. Just something I will have to check into and see what is what. The website was great, and proved to be some interesting reading.

By the way.......this website is great. I love the fact that you all tell the bad with the good. The only good surprises are the pleasant ones, and it always helps to have info, and insider information before this. I realize that there are things that one just must experience on one's own, but its nice to see someone care enough to make it a little easier. Definately didn't have that experience in Florida, and I love my stay there.
