$90.00 charge for taxi with dog to Red Hook?

I am fairly new to the USVI, but not to Island living. I recently arrived late in the evening carrying a small dog in a discreet over the shoulder bag. Grabbed my luggage and headed outside for a taxi to Red Hook and was greeted by the "dispatcher", who noticed I had an animal and told me I needed to have a private taxi to Red Hook and it would be $90.00...not looking me in the eye. He told me it was "The Law". I told him truthfully I didn't have that kind of money for the transport...he ignored me, continued to direct people to the taxi and the driver was loading luggage and assisting travelers. I approached the driver twice and said I needed to get to Red Hook, would he please allow me to get in the taxi. I was ignored. All the while, I have a dog that is extremely well behaved and the carrier looks like a purse. If I had known about this "Law" I would have prepared or simply made sure my jacket covered my purse and no one would have known about my friend. Anyway another driver approached the dispatcher, there was some "whispering", and then the new driver said he would take me for $60.00 bucks. I told him the truth...all I had on me for transport was $25.00, firm. That was it. I was about to start walking and the new driver said he take me. So, is there a law I am not aware of? Also, by Coconut Telegraph I have heard of 3 tickets issued on St.John in the last couple of weeks because dogs were not in a crate while riding in a passenger vehicle. Something about, "...if there were to be an accident then the dog would be running all over and the police dept. would then have to catch the dog."

Thanks to everyone who replied. I am still not sure about the "laws".... about pet travel in taxis and also if a crate is required for a pet when traveling in a private vehicle... so I will have to do some research.

Mell,
Your response about a"local option". I am traveling again in the near future, (April 4th). Would you are anyone else share some ideas about travel from the airport to Red Hook that does not involve the usual taxi service? I will need a ride for 2 adults and 1 child and of course the dog.

Hi Island Hopper,

My best suggestion to you would be to rent a car. I had reserved a rental car when I arrived with my pet, but unfortunately my flight arrived very late and the car rental desk was closed by the time I arrived.

(BTW Avis delivered our rental car right to us the next day -- wonderful service. I highly recommend them!!!)

If you don't want to rent a car I can probably help you to arrange something, but it would help if you became registered user so that you can receive PM's -- as it is not a good idea to post personal contact information for anyone on a public message board.

A crate is not required for a private vehicle but if the dog is loose on the front seat, there have been people ticketed because their "passenger" didn't have a seat belt fastened. A seat belt isn't needed in the back seat.
