Apollo 8, the first manned mission to the moon, entered lunar orbit on Christmas Eve, 1968. It orbited 10 times over the course of 20 hours, During that time, the crew made a live television broadcast that included images of the earth and moon as seen from the spacecraft. The Broadcast ended with the three-member crew taking turns reading from the Book of Genesis. It was, up to that point, the most-watched TV Broadcast ever.

They were going to do something else...this is a quote from Lovell:

Lovell:
"We tried new verses to "The Night Before Christmas" and to "Jingle Bells" but nothing really seemed to be appropriate...

"Almost the whole world would be listening to us on Christmas Eve. But the whole world does not consist of Christians. Why don't we say something that is significant to the majority of the people in the world? That is how it came to pass that on the last revolution of the moon, we read from the Old Testament the first ten verses of Genesis which is the foundation of many of the world's religions."

Bill Anders remembers that is was "not so much a religious reading, but more of a significant statement, that not just Christians and Jews would understand, but that all people, Buddhist, Hindu or atheist would react to in a deep and moving way to help them remember this event of exploration."

So, on that momentous occasion, we were all included.

The Atheist did react to the reading. Madalyn Murray O'Hair a very High Profile Atheist, responded by suing the United States Government, alleging violations of the First Amendment. The suit was dismissed by the Supreme Court Due to (LACK OF JURISDICTION). Later on the Apollo 11 mission Buzz Aldrin received Communion on the Lunar Surface.:D

Changed spelling of O'Hare to O'Hair'

However the lawsuit brought by American Atheists founder Madalyn Murray O'Hair (note the correct spelling of her name) prevented Aldrin from putting his communion show on the radio as he had originally planned. He did it in private while Armstrong watched in silence.

BTW, Aldrin later auctioned off the prayer card. Think of how much more it would have been worth if the communion had been allowed to be heard on the radio. http://historical.ha.com/c/press-release.zx?releaseId=1401

Sorry about the spelling of Madalyn Murray's last name I spelled O'Hare not O'Hair. Buzz did receive communion on the moon and the world knew it. I did not get the names of the Atheist Astronauts, they could put up one of your signs with your cute statements. 😀

More people admire Buzz Aldrin today for his amazing courage in overcoming his deep depression, alcoholism and subsequent divorces than for taking communion on the moon.
People on the message board will probably appreciate just having one post to ignore...so let's bag the Xtian vs atheist on this one!;)

HappyFace,
That is why it is important for us to speak out now. Because of the oppression and hatred of bigoted christians and people of other religions, Those of us with differing views such as gays and atheists and others are forced to keep their views hidden for fear of persecution. You will never know how many gays or atheists took part in the Lunar program. There are more than you think. We all deserve to be able to speak freely about our beliefs.
