Is there a cheaper way of geeting from the airport to redhook than taking one of the van taxis? We have taken the air taxis from red hook to Charlotte Amalie many times and saved a lot of dollars! How close to the airport do the air taxis go? Where do you pick up/drop off?

The open air taxis as opposed to the closed vans. We have found that when we have wanted to go to Charlotte Amalie from red Hook it is much cheaper to walk past those guys with the vans and pick up one of the open air taxis that cruise by.

Sorry, that threw me for a minute. I call them safari taxis. A taxi association has exclusive contract to take fares from the airport and I don't think they have any safari taxis. They would charge the same anyway. Are you on vacation or live there? Several STJ hotels pick up their guests at Crown Bay Marina and bring them by boat to STJ. I am just guessing, you may live in Red Hook, but I thought maybe you were trying to get to STJ? Anyway, I am not much help am I? Anyone else know?

Hello Polly,

Taxis are regulated with fixed rates per person and by destination. Taxi vehicles include vans, open air safari, SUVs & cars. Taxi fare between the airport and Redhook in a shared taxi would be around $11 pp, ow plus charges for luggage. A private taxi would be $90 for 1-4 passengers, (5 or more passengers add $15 for each additional person). Its usually taxi vans at the airport. The open air safari taxis are popular at the cruise ship docks and for island tours.

I think you are talking about 'dollar rides' as far as your experiences catching a cheaper open air taxi between Red Hook and Charlotte Amalie. Dollar rides function sort of like public transportation and the vehicles used are the same open air safari bus/trucks. Their rates are $1 pp within town and $2 pp for further distances/town to country. They usually pick up/drop off close to the public bus stops but don't go the full route of the public bus. They do pass along the main road by the airport on route between town and the university; not sure how often they pass along though. You'd have to walk from the airport to the main road.

There are a couple public bus stops in the airport area but the public bus isn't known to be all that reliable as there are frequent bus issues. A few weeks ago I heard that they were running on only a few buses so had limited service.

So easiest, most convenient and reliable option to get right from the airport to Red Hook is to take a taxi. Its just not the cheapest. 😉

Anyone have any recent experience taking the public bus or dollar rides from the airport area?
