Another question - Pharmacies

I am loving the wealth of info here! Pharmacies in USVI - STT - comparable to the States? Are there more chains or more independent pharmacies? Owned by islanders or mainland? Costco or K-Mart have a pharmacy? My husband does not want to do hospital pharmacy, only retail/pharmacy management.

There are no real listings in this field on Monster.com, etc. The lone gentleman we have spoken with indicates there is a relatively high turnover - younger pharmacists coming out of school, adventure in the islands, after a year they go home to girlfriends and family. The pay scale we have been quoted is roughly equivalent to stateside in our area; however, of course, the housing dollar does not go as far as in our area, other costs are inflated. Still, we are at the point in our lives where less is more.

Any general info on pharmacies or job-specific replies would be most appreciated. Although we have a tentative job pending our visit lined up, may as well hit as many places as possible during our stay and cast out the net.

There is no Costco. There is a pharmacy at K-Mart, probably the largest on island. Also Doctor's Choice, Drug Farm, Havensight, Nisky. I'm not sure if Sunrise is still at Vitraco as they closed their place in Red Hook.

I think it is more diffcult for professionals in the VI because there are so many opportunities in the states. The young ones get tired of the frustration and leave. The older ones know that there are problems there, too and learn to live with the differences.

You can check the phone book at www.viphonebook.com

P.S. I went to MCP in Boston and I am in sales now. The pay is not commensurate with the mainland.

Marty, I'm sorry - I don't know what MCP is 🙂

My husband is with Kroger stores - we have done i-net research into various pharmacies and this particular chain's pay scale is somewhat lower than what he is paid now, but ins. is included...no state tax...so we're just very curious about the disparity in salaries. The chains may possibly offer more than the independents, but we'll be hitting them all when we come down in about 6-7 weeks.

K Mart is the only chain drug store here. All the others are independantly owned. Sunrise is closed at Vitraco as well.
There is a rumor about Walgreen's comng, but just a rumor so far.

Marty-

Since I am lost on MCP, can I email you privately? Are you a pharmacist, by any wild chance?

By brews, do you mean compounding meds? Or am I missing a huge joke? Compounding is actually physically mixing two meds together to form another med...

Brews....sounds like a bar....which is actually a good med!
