applying for health insurance?

Hello everyone! So I will be moving in just over 2 months (can't wait!) and was thinking today about health insurance down there. I do plan on working in restaurants and/or hotels and was wondering if I can apply for health insurance before I leave the mainland. Whether I can apply for it or before I leave, are there multiple companies to choose from? Is it government issued? I will be on St John and am assuming I will have to go to St Thomas to get it, is it in Charlotte Amalie where I'll have to go?

Thanks in advance!

You can purchase health insurance once you get here. If you ask around once you're here, I'm sure you will find an insurance salesperson on St John. If you have stateside health insurance you can call the number on the back of your insurance card to see if they have any providers here. There are doctors and a clinic on St John, but if you need a hospital you will end up on St Thomas. Health insurance is expensive here and very few employers subsidize it for wait staff.

Also, if you use the search function on this site you will find many discussions about this topic, and much more information about local health insurance options.

Blue Cross is one of the few U.S. providers, but they suggest you change your policy to an island version of Blue Cross. Iwe have Blue Cross of Colorado, so all claims will be out of network. The local USVI insurnance is great coverage albiet a bit pricey. I priced my son a 22 year old male, was $115 a month with $500 deductable and then 100% after deductable to 2 milion. I can't remember the name but as dntw8up says there was a thread about insurance about a month ago.

Thanks for the replies. I do have health insurance now through my work and i'm trying to get a management job rather than just a server or bartending job. Do most restaurants provide health insurance for managers?

Other than the VI government, most employers here do not provide health insurance for employees.

Many of the larger hotels do so you might look into that.

Thanks, I will look into that. Does anyone know if Caneel Bay or the Westin offer health benefits?? I am single and young so I don't have a family that will need coverage as well.
